Damn KSI out here getting cancelled for saying a word that I’ve literally seen used by people on this forum.

But we’ll watch Korean shows with no representation of other cultures, no problem at all. But it’s somehow unrealistic that a lot of white people hung with white people and dated mostly white people in 90s NY? In 2023, even if you had a Latino playing Joey, he’d be cancelled for being a misogynist. Or if you had a Chinese playing Ross, he’d be cancelled for being homophobic. Totally unfair to look at it from today’s lens.

This is such a bizarre analogy. Korea barely has any non Korean people (Sub 5%). Black people on the other hand are a huge part of the States, especially in a city like NYC. Did black people not exist in the 90s? How are these even remotely comparable? I am complete confused what even is the point of it except to complain about wokeness?

Like people are allowed not to watch a dated early 2000s sitcom. And given that Friends remains the second biggest show on Syndication, it's clear that criticism is a minority criticism.

It's bizarre. The way we were dressed in jeans and t-shirts, while people had elaborate costumes planned around hyper specific lyrics.

70k people shouting f the patriarchy is also a sight. 🤣

So to clarify, we are asking for directly proportionate representation then? All Korean shows should then have 5% representation for non Koreans. All Indian shows should have Jain/Parsi/Sikh/Hindu/Muslim/Adivasi etc representation as per their relative population? I don’t believe that’s how representation works. I’d personally rather not an Apu in Simpsons represent me and I don’t want a socially awkward Raj in BBT to represent me either. Literally no one is denying the existence of black people in NYC. I’m not forcing anyone to watch the show, it’s the senseless criticism that I don’t get. I guess I’m just surprised that white people hanging out with white people (despite being one of the most multicultural cities in the world) is such a surprising thing to see on American TV.

The poster in the original tweet said he doesn't like Friends because it's a very white show and he doesn't relate. Instead he saw Living Single, which was the black equivalent of Friends/Seinfeld in the 90s. They are allowed to not like a show that they don't relate to? Like if you read the rest of the chain, they even comment about how they watch other all white shows, Friends just is very bland and dated. Which is fine. Lots of art is dated, people are allowed to dislike it for that.

Did I ask for proportional representation? My point was that Korea is a homogenous society and even then other East Asian cultures and artists frequently show up in their media. It was a pointless analogy.

On the note of India, it's actually funny how Bollywood heroes tend to be almost always of a certain cultural group, but let's not get into that ❤️

Not liking a show cos it isn’t funny is perfectly fine. A lot of people don’t like the laughter cues either. It being a white show doesn’t feel like a reason to dislike it, but sure. I don’t personally watch most shows for relatability, but maybe some people need that validation.

Genuinely curious what cultural group you mean? Mostly Punjabis and the Khans, but it targets the Hindi belt so I didn’t think that would be that weird?
