I was a bit put off when anchor at Oscars called RRR nomination and win as great moment for South Asia.

Why the phrase South Asia or South Asian community?

When the film is Indian? Why not great moment for India or Indian diaspora and community?

Is it regular practice abroad to use South Asian for anything from India? Or Indian subcontinent?

Why? Is it because all Browns look same to West? Are Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi films, public figures also called South Asian there?

Malala and PC are South Asian women there?

Indian subcontinent is called South Asia in general. Just like Ind Pak SL Ban Afg playing cricket called Asia Cup although Asia has 40-50 countries.

I dont think a white person can tell the difference between all these browns ppl.. I struggle as well..except for srilankans ..my god they are all expectionally goodlooking with their chiselled features .. I can spot them a mile away. 😍😍

I know that. But why does media abroad not give credit to an Indian film or icon for what they are? Why tag them South Asian? Is diaspora of these countries united abroad and sees themselves as South Asian community at large? I do not think so.

Pakistanis for eg would not give a damn about RRR or Naatu or Indians winning Oscar.

So why is RRR winning, a huge moment for South Asians as per the anchor?

A simple answer would be the anchor did not want to give India the credit if my first answer was not satisfactory.
