I don't think it is revenge. I guess, he feels this is the only way to control her. It's not necessarily to make her fall in love with him to hurt her, but because he has a huge ego he wants to have the upperhand. He is not in love but definitely attracted.

He did take a stand for her against MB but didn't tell Merab that when she asked him. If he was deceiving her could have used this to gain her trust.

Writers have made Merab too bratty too soon. Atleast, let us see how she feels suffocated in this environment and then her discomfort with this situation. It will help audience to relate to her.
