She seems very defensive about reviews complaining about how they work in terrible conditions without acs, working at night and before giving reviews reviewers should spend the time they spend shooting these dramas then they’ll understand the hard work put in these shows before they say something negative .

The whole thing sounds stupid because art is meant to be critiqued , you don’t have to be an actor yourself to like watching a drama.

Bilal says a hit or a flop is a state of mind for him because only they know the effort they’ve put into the work.

the interviewer gives the example of a car, a person can know if it’s a good car without knowing how the car is made. He says they don’t have to be in the industry to know good work.

Maya seemed on edge the whole interview while Bilal seemed more relax. She did most of the talking . I don’t remember her getting particularly negative reviews so I’m not understanding why she’s so sensitive to reviews.

Completely agree with what you said.

And I would like to share the link regarding why a critical culture is important to improve content from one of my favourite film reviewers, Baradwaj Rangan. He argues why these reviews and critiques are so important in fostering the improvement of art. And how to deal with the democratization of reviews in this age of social media.

The best performers there were Uzma Hassan who played a pivotal character with dignity and the stepmom played by Rabia Butt. The parallel storylines were much more interesting because Maya played Rakshi, the protagonist, very weakly. Upar se she wore too much make-up which seemed unlike the innocent teenager she was playing. Even Shehyrar Munawar who is generally a poor performer was good in that drama.

she got great reviews for Jo bachar Gaye and Hassan even tells her that in the interview. Everyone is still raving about the drama . Maybe she’s pissed it didn’t get the ratings it deserved but that’s not reviewers fault .people have given her praise when she’s deserved it so she should be able to accept the criticism too.

OMG i love BRangan. he is my favorite! Maya came across like an idiot, I am sorry, I have really liked her shows but it’s almost like at one point I felt she came with an agenda to say something about reviewers and frankly the whole thing screamed sour grapes. My sister always says when girls loose a lot of weight, remember they loose some in the brain also.

What was she on about? From critics make your shows then talk, there are many terrible indian movies but we still sing their songs, everyone cannot do everything….Behen! Correct isiliye Aap acting jyaada aur baatei kum!!!!

Can I say HATS off to Hasan for being so graceful through that interview and NO marks to Bilal do just sitting there and giving his additions instead of maturely diverting or even presenting a more sensible side to her rubbish. Both of them disappointed me in this interview.

Ahem…but I will still watch the show 😝😝😝 but they have lost a potential fan!

PS someone please send amna and Hasan the brangan link…please

The interview was very off putting and derogatory whether it was pointed at Something Haute or some other review channel. Never been a fan of Maya and I saw her previous interview with something haute too but this ruined her image for me. She comes across as such an arrogant entitled individual. No matter how big an actor you become, you need to have grace and humility and handle criticism and she has a long way to go.

Hi!

BOLD- Same pinch! I am a BRangan fangirl at this point, lol. He has the ability to articulate thoughts about movies in a way that resonates with me often. Even if it's an unpopular review or something I don't agree with, there's plenty to unpack from his critiques. I dunno if you are Tamil, but assuming that, I think you will get this reference-imagine Maya Ali reacting to a review from Blue Sattai Maran🤣

ITALICS- LOL...Never thought about it that way, haha.

The thing is both Bilal/Maya came off as distasteful in this interview. There are times when I disagree with SH but this is not one of them. Indeed, kudos to Hassan for remaining calm in the face of this tirade.

The other day, I saw an interview of Ali Abbas and Adeel Hussain on SH and the graceful way in which they took criticism or appreciated the role of reviews/critiques makes me respect them as artistes much more.

No I am not Tamil, just a Tv and movie enthusiast.

In fact, apparently when Hasan asked Fahan about his eye roll of a show mere Humsafar- he was very cordial, polite and did patiently address the issues.

These two have definitely turned me off … and I happen to come across some shorts of their interview again … and frankly I felt both of them had arrived knowing fully when what they were going to say. Lallat hai!

The minute an actor says ‘critics shouldn’t review our work because they are not actors’, I genuinely think ‘ok this person lacks intelligence’. Honestly speaking, Maya has always come across a little dim and insecure so this spiel, coming from her, isn’t that surprising.

If you can consume art, you can critique it. The lay viewer’s critique will be purely focused on how enjoyable the work was, whilst the professional critic who has more intricate knowledge of the techniques used to produce the work, will critique the story, the direction, etc. The bottom line is that all forms of criticism are valid. If you’re going to take the view that television is above criticism then you will need to start refraining from having an opinion on anything, Not a cook? You can’t comment on the foods you like/dislike. Not a fashion designer? Don’t comment on clothes. Not a teacher? Forget about having an opinion on your child’s education. Taking this line of thinking to its logical conclusion - if you haven’t studied acting, if you haven’t been professionally trained, you shouldn’t be acting…
