It didn't make much noise because it was a documentary film.

Whether we accept or not documentaries don't make much noise in India. For that matter even elephant whisperers did not make much noise.

In India feature films are the ones which make noise.
Naatu naatu has captured public imagination because of the way the song was presented in the movie.

I know that not many Indians are not aware of the lyrics in the original language much less what the song is all about.

It is a beautiful song telling about the lives in remote villages and talks about their hardships and small joys. It is a noisy song sung exactly the way these kind of songs in the villages sung by the villagers.
