I guess in high class society its not so much taboo for them. I am not generalizing but vahan pe utna uncommon nahi hai shayad and people don't care much about age gap. Moreover with Dev's family they seem to want him to get married and settle down. Abb tak he always said no but first time he fell for someone so they just want him to be happy. They don't seem to care kaun hai kis age ki hai and all.
Middle class family mein it can be shocking to any parent that their daughter loves a man double her age. And vahan mohalle mein sab aas paas hi rehte hain toh they are bound to gossip. Even if she loved a man of same age voh log phir bhi gossip karteš
Vaise I felt it may be a girl boy thing also. I mean if Chitra loved someone 20 years elder to her poore ghar ka reaction hi kuch aur hotaš¤£ they wouldn't be as welcoming of the idea as they are for Dev.
It can also be due to the fact that Dev is the older one. He doesn't stand much to loose. Vidhi's life has just begun and she has a whole life ahead of her. Atleast society seems to think so.

its cause of how Middle Class society is even in real life.
har kisi ka har dusre ke ghar me aana jana, taka jhaki lagi rehti hai...i hav seen such so conservative regressive people in the place where my granddad lived... (at least grateful my family wasnt like that.. they were way too progressive for their time n generation)
so these middle class families are so worried abt their so called reputation that agar kisi dusre ko pata laga humare bache ne kya kiya then humari ijjat pe batta lagega... as middle class people think all they have is Ijjatt.. paisa to hai nahi to sara theekra ijjat ke sar phodte hai aur fir us ijjat ka bojh uthate hai bache especially betiya...
yaha mat jao, waise mat baitho, are dheere bolo, aaram se chalo, ye mat pehno, aise mat dekho, ye mat khao, wo mat khao, aisa karo... waisa mat karo...kaam karna seekho nahi to sasural me naak kataogi, padhne ki kya jarurat sab chauka chulha hi to karna hai, bhai se jabaan mat ladao, sehna seekho and what not *sigh*
