Dharavi redevelopment project shall be interesting. I’d hear stories from my grandparents (who’d go there under voluntary projects and speak to locals) that a lot of the people you see living out on the streets/jhopadpatti have rented their houses/chawls and make a lot more money that way. The businesses there (believe it or not) are BOOMING. Asia’s largest slum, but the entrepreneurs there are well and truly thriving. Dharavi ka rasta was the shortcut to our old place and boy did I hate driving past, the stench is one of the worst in the world. And the amount of open defecation is just awful. But the area has huge potential, hope to see some genuine redevelopment that betters lives.

Many people rent their govt allocated houses and continue living in Dharavi. Not only Dharavi, happens with many slums around India. Have seen the same in Ahmedabad. Couple years back a local TV journalist were taking interviews and and someone got caught renting his govt allocated house and still living in slum and the guy indirectly started threatening Tv guy saying he knows local gunda. 🤷‍♀️

Top level govt tries to fix the slum issues but there are many levels of corruption. And sometimes, even the top ones are corrupted. Like we have seen in India’s glorious past scams.
