No one in India hyped Reita Faria when she won Miss World in 60s.

India opening up its economy and all globalisation, liberalisation, privatisation led to hyping pageants, brought global shows and content, brands, channels, lifestyle in India. And we lapped it up.

It has led to slew of other industries also like plastic surgery, cosmetology, fashion design, hair styling, make up artists, so called grooming classes, personality development classes and english speaking and public speaking classes, skin lightening business and sham height increase business as well as rise of gyms and dieticians.

Even Miss India is a marketing gimmick to target states and towns. That auto driver's daughter Manya being one of winners was a way to aim at population from small towns and lower income groups too and move away from just elite families and upper middle class sections or metro towns most Miss Indias came from earlier.

If giving the wrong answer and winning is rigging then Sushmita’s win may be rigged too.

Remember in Miss India, Sush and Ash were both tied and they were asked a tie breaker question. Sushmita was asked about the textile heritage of the country and she said it began with Gandhi’s Khadi when it was actually centuries old. It was a factually incorrect answer yet she won.

I don’t care on pc but since she’s an Indian and is popular in the states I would use that to brag to the Americans those not desi and say see we Indians are popular too !! 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳and brag on how many miss world and universe we won including the latest H.Sandhu whose a Punjabi Sikh ( the 1st Sikh to win a competition) just to brag to non desis lol because they have stereotypes on desi people !!
