Oo controversial topic. There are so many sub sections of immigration. If you’re an immigrant coming over with a skilled set, paying your taxes, contributing to the growth of the economy, I can totally see why you’d be pissed off about another immigrant working at your local pizza shop or your local cabbie earning cash in hand, not paying a dime in tax, claiming benefits, free healthcare, free education etc. I remember watching a documentary about a lot of Roma Gypsy communities who are found begging on the streets of Europe and the mansions they had built back home with that money. The debate on immigration is not a linear one.
The politics loving nerd in me finds it fascinating when white people put two brown women in charge of being Home Secretary. Kinda like their very own get out of jail card. How can we possibly be racist when the home minister is brown?😆

I know a colleague whose cousin came to US on tourist visa, married a guy whose family got GC on his Bua’s file just before 3 years. Cousin got Green card in a year. Whereas the person I know has been in USA for 15 years, did masters, got work, paid taxes, bought a house and still no GC. 🤷♀️
Fair immigration I guess. 😆
Like you said, immigration has lot of scenarios. From a logical point of view, you can’t give priority to chain immigration than a skilled immigration.

When they gonna come shout "Go back to your own country", they don't really ask for your immigration documents first 😆
Anyway, I think your discussion comes largely to class conflicts. Every one wants to head to places with better opportunities. Some people have the resources in their home countries to be legal migrants, most people don't.
Roma history has of course more layers with how Europeans have treated them over the centuries. And I don't think I am qualified to comment on that.

I know right. First Priti Patel and then Suella.
UK politics is a soup.
