Years ago when I was in Singapore, they showed a Malayalam movie called Taniavardhanam (please correct me if anyone knows this movie and I am not getting the name right). It’s a Mammotty starrer. All I remember about the movie is how weird it was. I think every male in the movie become mad or something in the end, I cannot quite recall now. :/😳

the movie was about how a family believed in so many superstitious .. one of which was coz of some curse (cant recollect) one member of the family will go mad and the curse is passed on generations after generations. the title thanivarthanam means repetition .. so even when mammooty isn’t mad .. his actions are misinterpreted.. not by his family but whole village and he is put in asylum… his uncle also had same fate who had to spent entire life in a dark room and eventually died . and next was turn of mammooty so his own mom kills him to make him free of this life .. she knew he wasnt mad

It's unfair to the uppercase men who can't marry or have a family and of course terribly unfair to the women of others castes

Thanks for the quick synopsis. Now when you put it forth like that, it doesn’t sound weird at all. May be because I was just too young to understand the depth of the story at that time . We were just excited that some Indian movie was coming on the Singapore National TV and sat around to watch it. :)

@Roy: Is it just me who confuses this movie with ‘Bombay Velvet’?

Oh okay, I think this topic requires a separate thread...

I heard only the eldest of the namboodri brothers was allowed to marry, of course to another namboodri girl, the other brothers cannot marry but were allowed have many sambandams

And the namboodri women were not allowed to step outside the house ( this of course was the custom in many parts of India then)
