Had a question about why is it termed as a disease in psychology, during my studies in college gen-psych we were taught about lgbtq+ and how they born in society, i dont recall much of it but we told that its a disease although I never believed it.

In Europe, when Church started proselytising, a lot of customs were changed and "same-sex" relations were looked down upon - citing Bible and other texts. They crafted an entire narrative as to how it is a "disease" and can spread - leading to persecution of "homosexuals".
This idea continued for ages - since if you keep repeating a thing, after a point people start believing it. That led to the early psychologists look at it as a disease, however not all believed it to be so.
Sigmund Freud went on to say that all humans are inherently bisexual and crafted the theory of libido.
But a lot of then (19-20th century Western psychologists believed it to be a disease that could be cured, purely due to religious beliefs.)
It is interesting to note that Jesus never said anything about persecuting people for being gay/homosexual. Nope.
The history is very complicated but in nutshell, it has to do with proving one section of community is "better" than the other and going to an extent that you don't deserve to live because you can't "reproduce" and so on.
Indigenous societies across the world on other hand have different communities, in India they're called hijdas/hijras, Native Americans call them two-spirit, and so on.
But Colonialism entrenched hatred towards the LGBT+ community through various laws and social/legal persecution. Decolonising the minds and unlearning the learnt hatred is the way forward. ❤️

I am surprised if anyone is teaching that sexual/gender diversity is a disease and it's just how people are born. Usually, people who don't like diversity don't admit that it is natural, right? May I ask, in which country and in which decade did you take this General Psychology course?
Psychologists who say that sexual/gender minorities are diseased are just echoing the prejudices of society. Using circular logic, they may point to individuals who are oppressed for being different, to the point that they develop suicidal depression or agree to undergo harmful conversion therapy, and say, "Seven times more likely to attempt suicide! See! Anyone who isn't cis-gendered and heterosexual is mentally ill!"
When psychologists actually study how early in life individuals become aware of their gender identity and sexual orientation, and how diversity correlates with genetic traits, brain structure, and gestational conditions, they become aware that individuals are born diverse, and some identities are fluid over a lifetime, but as far as we try to control gender identity and sexual orientation, they are immutable and it is healthier just to accept them as they are.
In the animal species most closely related to humans, same-sex activity is extremely common. I am not aware of any animal species in which homosexuality doesn't occur. Look for it and you'll find it.
With more complete and uncensored scientific information, psychologists agree that being LGBTQIA+ is not a set of diseases. Even so, sexual/gender minorities may benefit from counselling that is respectful of their diversity. The distress that a transgender person feels from having body parts that disagree with gender identity is called a dysphoria rather than a disease. It can be treated with gender-affirming surgery and hormones, allowing the person to lead a happier life.
Happy pride month!! Amazing thread 🤗 Love it!❤️

Hi, thank you for explaining so well, I study in Canada. The class I took was during 2018-2019. Im not exactly sure of what were we debating at that time. I just recall the prof terming it as a disease or maybe something related to genetics. Or maybe im confusing someone else’s statement but yeah I just wanted a clarity since this topic triggers me as I strongly believe it is not.
