Hema and Dharam abused it so that Dharam could take a second wife.

But actually, it is the Indian law that is forcing people to abuse religions. The marriage acts are religion-based and don't make it easy to marry across religions. The special marriage act is complicated and doesn't allow any ritual - which sometimes is unacceptable to families who want to have rituals.

Mahesh Bhatt's father is a Hindu and his mother is a Muslim. He has never denied either side of his religious heritage. It is a common rumor that he converted to marry Soni Razdan. It may or may not be true. But the fact is, he need not have converted. His first wife divorced him when he had an affair with Parveen Babi. So he did not need to do anything shady to get a second wife. Also, Soni Razdan is an atheist. Her father is a Kashmiri Pandit and her mother is English/German. So it doesn't make sense why he would convert to marry her. And finally - it's not really conversion if you were raised in a mixed religion household - both faiths are a part of you. Religion sometimes can be a cultural identity than purely faith-based.

You are right though, using the term convert probably isn’t right in his case. He was raised in both religions. He doesn’t practice either but from pictures of the inside of his house there’s a prominent Islamic/religious decorative writing on his shelves, and his family celebrates Christmas.

You are right. I knew they were separated after Parvin Babi, but incorrectly assumed they got divorced.

And looks like he did convert per his own statements. I stand corrected.
