See I've read a lot on this trope both romanticization as well as reversal, and when I see this show this is the only analogy that comes to me...
I'm not sure i can convince anyone to it but the narcissistic forever hot-and-cold behaviour of mother-son duo is responsible for this.
They've classic captor mindset both of them. And the problem is our societal structure has normalised it so much under the bond of matrimony. It's impossible to see where to draw the line especially in case of married couples. (Though this case is different as it had a third angle too, makes it more disgusting tbh)
