What can I say guys....Came back from watching the movie but still not able to come back from the SLB’s masterfully created world of Gangubai. I know some of the reviews were saying it was just a one time watch, but I know I am going to watch this movie at least one more time because come on, it’s not everyday you get to watch such masterpieces.
This is easily Alia’s the best performance so far and won’t be surprised if she isn’t able to top this for the rest of her career because the role she got here is a once in a lifetime kind of a role. And one just has to see it to believe it! No wonder SLB picked wanted her as his titular character.
Those who said SLB was in Alia’s world must be just exaggerating or got carried away after watching the movie. I mean how can you even say such a stupid thing otherwise that SLB was in Alia’s world? Each and every meticulously put together frame has SLB’s touch to it. Not just Alia or the other main characters but even some random girl sitting silently in some far corner is made to look and act the part like as if she was the main character of the movie. How does he do it? First he makes them go through rigorous preparation sessions and then doesn’t capture the scene until they get it right even if he has to make them go through a 100 takes. Such was the length of detail to which SLB goes to.
Those who watched the movie aaj ke date me name just one director who is capable of creating such a masterpiece the way SLB did? No doubt it was Alia and the other actors (mainly Alia because she was literally there in each and every frame)who helped convey his vision to the audience but their every move, every dialog, every heart touching scene , their beautiful costumes, I mean you name it and it is entirely his vision.
You just have to go watch these actors in their other movies to see the contrast of what SLB does to them in his movies. He is one of those few directors where the actors have to surrender themselves to the director’s vision and strive to fit in and deliver because he simply doesn’t accept anything less than that. Those who said Karan forced SLB to take Alia, nahi behen/bhai sahab SLB doesn’t even pick a pet if it didn’t fit into his vision toh why would he pick up his titular character just because she was shoved down his throat? There is no other actress other than Alia who could’ve played this part the way Alia did in such a convincing manner. They probably think they were insulting Alia by summing up her act as playing dress up, but really they were displaying their own ignorance and pettiness!
Pheww...this was the first time I wrote this much for a movie review that too about a director! :)
Coming to the other actors, each and every one of them played their part really well. Ajay Devgan delivers the punch just the way we have come to expect of him. Vijay Raaj , the actress who plays Sheela maasi , Jim, the tailor guy with whom Gangu falls in love with and even the actors who played the minor roles-uff what masterclass performances by each one of them.!
The movie is going to move you to tears. It will make you understand the plight of the sex workers and why it’s important for them have their rights. It will make you sympathize and empathize with them. But I am glad that it isn’t some kind of a sob story or in your face disturbing. It does make you uncomfortable because that is exactly what the director intends to do, to make you uncomfortable and force you to think about those grossly mistreated and discriminated women. That’s the take away message he intends to send out!
I just realized I wrote a saga and didn’t even get to the main point about the loaded dialogs which are the jaan of movie, the beautifully conceptualized scenes, the background music etc. But I think I will just let you experience it for yourself!
