Reading both Anna Karenina and Madame Bovary added to my general discomfort about marriage, because both books showcase how stifling it can be for women, even with spouses who are overall basically decent men. But I guess it could be argued these two were themselves kind of delusional and high-strung...

We need a counterpoint from the married ladies on this thread lol😆

But the best part of Anna Karenina for me was the Kitty/ Levin story. Honestly I would've enjoyed the novel just fine without the Anna/Vronsky plot I wanted to know more about Levin and his brother and the social and political shifts that shaped Levin's story. But i guess Anna and Vronsky were the bourgeois counterparts to Levin... (I want to say something more but I already spoiled Rebecca for austen so...)

BTW the best screen adaptation I've seen of Anna Karenina is this one (there is an English version). Vittoria Puccini is just sublime as Anna - she is SO beautiful and talented!

I detested the Keira Knightley version (both her with her prissy expression and Aaron Taylor with his poofy blond hair were just so wrong😒).

Don't you think Keira Knightley is overrated? I so disliked her as Elizabeth too in P&P.. Didn't watch her Anna bcz hadn't read the book but go ahead and talk about it, it'll probably be some time before I finish it which is stuck somewhere in the beginning still. ☹️

Keira doesn't seem to look right in period pieces and her acting doesn't lift her above. She was alright in Atonement and Love Actually which is the other two I've seen her in.

And about marriage, well, you girls seem to have a rather biased and (imbalanced?unhealthy?), not sure which adjective to use sorry if I sound offensive... but what I'm saying is there are other ways to look at it.. I guess it's that you need to be at the time in your life where you're ready for it.. If you're not, and if the idea of marriage itself is unpalatable then even the best of men won't make it work. I don't think in real life it works like it did for Jija, that you don't believe in something and suddenly love happens and everything works! 😒
