Love hostel -

Performances were good but I felt there were certain inconsistencies in it. Vikrant, Sanya, actress playing Sanya's friend were top notch & the gruesome scenes of the honor killing were visibly extreme especially how the movie was initiated over a young couple getting killed for marrying as per their choices.

There were certain scenes that I felt were predictable and Dugar getting paid for his sins was slightly predictable though I felt when the girl in the beginning said how his karma will eat him, I felt that execution was stale for some reason.

The teenage brother of Jyoti seemed to be male chauvinist or some mental issues otherwise how come the father allows him to beat his sisters? Such a regressive family.

The Fame Game

An overall interesting crime thriller + drama. It goes Bollywood excess at points and certain side plots are pointless or ludicrous. It's still entertaining. Madhuri is ethereal as always.

Vampires vs. the Bronx

This is a fun kid's horror action-adventure film. It follows the classic best buds get into shenanigans theme, but in the diverse NYC borough of the Bronx.

To All the Boys I have Loved Before: Always and Forever

A cute third part to the beloved franchise. It's an easy-breezy streaming watch. The romance is more relatable but still has its romcom fantasy flights.

The teenage brother was the worst. He breaks his eldest sister's ribs, drags another elder sister by her hair and nobody reprimands him. He has a demonic glee as he trashes his sisters and crushes their spirit. Dad stands up at the end. But he should have put a stop to Grandma's influence long back. It is clear he hates his mom and she's not even staying with the family. Sanya's mother would rather parrot Grandma's dictates rather than stand by her daughters or husband. The whole family is poison.

I loved the way the Malayalam film Ayyappanum Koshiyum handled toxic patriarchy,How it affects the whole family. Even the macho men who might be decent human beings at heart and love their family. Even if they want to step back and let things go but are forced by the elders to continue the toxicity. On the flip side there are always women like Sanya's Grandma who wants to use sons and grandsons to oppress the women in their own family.

Yup, the family definitely does not have a proper backbone henceforward the outcome is established. I feel perhaps the brother grew up witnessing more of the shitty behavior or something otherwise he would be at some mental rehab or prison. Have seen elder brothers beat their sisters black & blue, and no doubt younger siblings thrashing older siblings exist too but the way it was executed here was like the teen brother was above & beyond his limits. The grandma's just idiotic despite being a woman herself. As a woman myself criticizing another woman, it's just speaking the brutal honest review of the behavior depicted in the movie.

I haven't seen the malayalam movie honestly speaking. Have heard of it but never got the chance to see it. 😆 Will try to see if hindi dub or english subs based movie is available or not.

I felt mid-way the drama got boring or monotonous for some reason. Perhaps ending episodes were better in retaining the thrill factor. Though not that bad but execution/pacing felt off certain places here & there for sure.

Ayyappanum Koshiym is not a call against patriarchy or anything. It's a commercial mass movie -albeit one well written with well rounded characters. It is essentially about ego tussles between men and the women characters take a back seat ). But we get a glimpse how patriarchy and societal expectations shapes young men into being victims as well as perpetrators. So much so that an otherwise loving husband slaps his wife in a moment of frustration. To the makers and the hero's credit, they didn't defend it ala Kabir Singh style when questioned. Slapping a woman is wrong. The character was wrong to have done that and neither him nor his wife is to be emulated or be a role model to an ideal relationship. That was the response.

West Side Story (2021)

Steven Speilberg's mastery shines in the long shots and camera angles. I wish I had seen it in theaters because it is visually captivating. Ariana Debose rules the movie. She reminds me a bit of Madhuri - she lights up every frame she's in with her smile and charisma and her dancing is exquisite.

The French Dispatch

Wes Anderson movies are a hit or miss for me. This one missed the mark for me. It was quirky, funny, and entertaining. But I didn't find it as engaging.

Shazam!

One of DC's lighter and more entertaining superhero films.

Underwater (2020). Good movie except I was stressed out from start to finish. By the end of the film I was exhausted and felt pretty gloomy. I’m not sure if it’s due to the film or because I remembered that tomorrow’s Monday. Anyway, I liked the movie and will never watch it again. Moral of the story is to stay away from the ocean folks.
