Correction and update:

The budget for this movie is 160Cr, which means it needs at least 180Cr to break even. And has to earn into 200cr range to be considered a big hit

Also, according to this article opening was 9 crore and not 10. So whatever I said about inflating figures was correct. But what do I know? I’m just a bot na?

Enjoyed watching the film a lot. Such a nice break from the usual Bhansali films and his same old template. For once he has focussed more on the story and plot than the beauty and aesthetics around. Alia has completely killed it and has owned every single frame she is in which is literally every second of the film. Alia is there throughout the film and the way she has moulded herself in the character of Gangubai at this stage of her career is worth praising. You could literally see the whole transformation of Ganga to Gangubai to Gangubai Mafia Queen through her body language and the confidence with which she performed. Despite the film being super lengthy, there's not even a moment where Alia struggles to keep you glued to the screen. Especially the second half of the film, she is TERRIFIC! Poora phaad diya hai with such a massy seeti maar performance as Gangu. The last time someone did the same was Vidya in The Dirty Picture. You know the type of reaction you would get in a Khan film. Full mass dialogue baazi at its best. She deserves every single praise she is getting, you can see she has worked really hard in this film and put in her all, which is commendable given that SLB literally started shooting this within days of Inshallah getting shelved.

However I completely disagree with reviews and people who are undermining SLB and saying it is SLB in Alia's world. Nope. Not at all. It is completely SLB's world and after a long time we got to watch his world in it's rawest and authentic form. Gangubai is easily one of his best given that he has tried to completely reinvent himself and give such a commercial massy twist to an unexpected character like Gangubai. The way he got over his obsession with colours and has completely given a melancholic white look to the film was such a breath of fresh air. So many beautifully written scenes in the film by him like the one where Gangu talks about the shades of white when that guy comes to take her measurement, that emotional phone call between her and her mom and the operator going on interrupting and reminding about the remaining time left, uff Alia was too good in that whole '30 second baki hai' scene. Plus the whole set, the sounds, the old songs, the continuous cacaphony of hymns in the evening mixed with the calls of the women in Kamathipura- everything so cleverly written and brought to life by SLB. So sorry but in films like these it's always the director> the actor.

The film does have it's flaws, it could be written better and crisper, it looked more like small episodes happening one after the other and SLB definitely could've done with less songs given most of them were forgettable. Funnily Dholida the most viral song from the film didn't really have any impact when seen in context of the whole film.I didn't mind the length since it wasn't boring at any time.
