yes, its a good one time watch....though its a grim movie
All the performances are top notch but the film is half-baked.Vikrant Massey was superb in exploring his character's vulnerability and helplessness and resolve to do better. The part where the Judge asks his profession breaks my heart. It's so obvious that he has faced this question and the predictable response umpteen times. Sanya is feisty and the perfect partner who stands up to authority every time. Quite a contrast to Vikrant who prefers to smoothen things and not offend. Pity there wasn't time enough to explore her character properly. But the weak climax was a huge let down. The villain of the piece is Sanya's teen-age brother. The babyish visage while he beats his older sisters and drags them by their hair is a huge contrast.
Performances were good but I felt there were certain inconsistencies in it. Vikrant, Sanya, actress playing Sanya's friend were top notch & the gruesome scenes of the honor killing were visibly extreme especially how the movie was initiated over a young couple getting killed for marrying as per their choices.
There were certain scenes that I felt were predictable and Dugar getting paid for his sins was slightly predictable though I felt when the girl in the beginning said how his karma will eat him, I felt that execution was stale for some reason.
The teenage brother of Jyoti seemed to be male chauvinist or some mental issues otherwise how come the father allows him to beat his sisters? Such a regressive family.
My Take
Love Hostel
A Haryanvi newlywed records a video message for her father. Now that she has run away with the boy, she wants the world to know she is legally married to him. A marriage certificate is held up in front of her. She says she is tired of being chased. Her eyes fill with tears. Her husband reassures her by placing his hand on hers. Their faces are filled with fear as they know they cannot escape the ire of the girl's family regardless of the judge's order or a safe home.
This opening scene in the blandly titled Love Hostel serves as a stark reminder of the lawlessness that exists in this part of the world. An assassin on the prowl leads a right-thinking lawyer who aids a runaway couple - the film's two protagonists - later in the gritty, tensile drama about an interfaith marriage.Ahmed (Vikrant) and Jyoti (Sanya) are star-crossed lovers who elope and get married. The influential family of Jyoti opposes it. As the drama unfolds, they hire a mercenary (Bobby) to kill the two.
As the title does not suggest, Love Hostel is about two star-crossed lovers from different walks of life (religion to be specific) who try to live together by breaking with societal norms. But how can the society stay out of their business? Jyoti's family includes a matriarch, Dadi, who is also a respected politician. She sends a mercenary to kill them both and remove the 'daag' from their family name. The movie appears to be an obvious love story with a mercenary on the hunt for two lovers. However, there is more to it than that.
It is through their love story that we realize how illegal it is to choose a partner in some places. The corrupt cops, Jyoti’s young brother who feels entitled to save their ‘izzat’ and hits her leaving a wound, or her father who has no agency over the decisions about his daughters’ lives. For Ahmed, his father is staged as a terrorist, he is dragged into illegal business, demeaned because he is Muslim. For that matter, the mercenary feels he is incharge of ‘cleaning’ the society and by that he means not letting girls of his clan marry guys from another. The trauma, bad practices and evils are never spoon fed to you, but you are supposed to grasp and understand the message.
Sanya Malhotra and Vikrant Massey have a great chemistry in Love Hostel. Bobby Deol plays the ruthless brutal Dagar. Sanya has the tough part to break the Pagglait image because the looks are somewhat similar, but she does that quite well.Vikrant Massey plays a Muslim boy but doesn't overdo it, the way Muslim characters have been stereotyped for years. Bobby Deol gets to play the ruthless brutal Dagar. It does seem a bit out of body experience when he has too many dialogues.
Kunal Sharma's concept is intriguing. As a result of a regressive mindset in society, a safe home for couples can make for a fantastic film. But Mehak Jamal and Yogi Singha's story is poor and doesn't do justice to this fine concept. The screenplay isn't tight. There are several problems with the writing, including weak subplots and insufficient explanations. There is also a disappointing conclusion. It has average dialogue from Yogi Singha. Usually, a film like this has hard-hitting dialogue.
