So she spent 3 years in Kolkata at an age when you are most receptive learner. So I am sure she must have picked Bengali at that time.

That's very interesting. I did not know that. But I had heard her speak Bengali on Radio and she was fluent in the language.

Shreya once mentioned that when she met Lata ji, Lata ji told Shreya that her Bengali accent in songs was a bit off😆.She was a humongous artist.Lata ji came at a time when playback singing was in a nascent stage. She had to figure out what expressions to use, how to sing all these different kinds of songs, how to emote these different moods, situation she really had nothing as reference and that's why she is who she is and why her magic is everlasting.

Sonu Nigam has spoken at length about this in one of his interviews. He says that he and his contemporaries all listen to those legends to learn how to emote, how to bring in nuances - but those people had no reference point. They were truly blessed that they were able to figure out all this and sent benchmarks. He goes on to give several examples of different moods and emotions.

I must apologize to you Realityshow- for giving you wrong information. - (But I picked it from one of the articles I read about Lata Mangeshkar.) Now from her interview I found out that Master Vinayak's studio was in Kolhapur and from there it shifted to Mumbai in 1945. So she never really lived in Kolkata. Lesson for me, always double check. Sorry, once again. 🙂

That is why I always disliked the name Kolkata. This would have never happened if we had stuck to the much more dignified Calcutta! 🤣
