Firstly, the bolded part is precisely the problem.

How is religion even in that statement? It's like saying I'm not feminist but... if you have to start the thought with that of course you're feminist, but you're ashamed of it, though you still want the rights.

If not, who precisely are you addressing? There are no Mughals left in India to take offense. Brits don't give a damn. The only people left from the groups you mentioned in that sentence are Indian Muslims and Christians.

It's all a spectrum of thought that Indian Muslims and Christians are somehow part of the prior invaders and therefore the *other.* It's what causes people to tell SRK to go to Pakistan. No, you didn't mention his name in the post, but the overall vibe...

Calling them Islamist or Christian invaders when history makes it clear both groups were after land and wealth is very much an attempt to drag religion into it. In fact, Akbar made his own religion. Yes, the Mughals forced conversions. All tyrants do. I don't know if Brits did. I thought that was the Portuguese who did that. In any case, it should be a part of discussion.

But when you start off the discussion with religion as the first feature mentioned, it kind of makes the agenda clear.

My immediate thought: you're bringing in the religion followed by an invading force in a discussion about intolerance toward a man who follows the same religion. You're saying he should've remembered Islamic prayer was foreign and indicative of the invaders before having the temerity to be open about his faith in a land belonging to Hindus.

People make assumptions based on the words you use. I did, as well.

As for having friends of the faith. I have friends who support the BJP, too. Doesn't mean I'm not against BJP. (Same for Congress, but they're not in power). My dad in fact was a BJP supporter mainly because he believed the party at least had the spine to stand up and be proud of India. My parents weren't NRIs. I left on my own accord, and they declined to join me. They were the same kind of proud Indians SRK was. My dad didn't like any of BJP's policies, but he supported them on that one reason alone. I loved my parents, but it doesn't mean I didn't think he was completely wrong. So yeah... you can have friends and family who are of a faith and still harbor negative thoughts about them.
