Chapter 90

One Step Ahead

Her eyes followed a lone spider crawling on the ceiling. It wasn’t that she was sleepy, rather that her body refused to move. Abhay wasn’t around. It wasn’t completely silent either. Her ears were ringing. Like bells right next to her eardrums, getting louder and louder with passing time. She covered her ears with her palms, and rolled to her side till the ringing subsided.

Abhay?

Yes jaan?

Where are you?

It was a night of reunion, one good and one bad. Right now, they were in the good. He hadn’t seen Jovan in over 70 years. After Abhay left him and Iolanda to live with Haseena, they only communicated through letters and the occasional drink if they were in the same city. But 70 years was nothing for their kind. It was quiet downstairs. They shared a glass of wine together, in the living room, exchanging little words to start off. A comfortable silence they never got bored of. Abhay swirled his glass, mind in turmoil. Jovan could smell her all over him. He smiled and passed the glass to his other hand, sitting forward. He avoided the topic of Maithili for now.

“Your name has been creating quite the ruckus lately. You know, if anyone were to have a human as a soulmate, I would always think it would be you.”

Abhay managed to chuckle and set his glass aside, glancing up the stairs. Naturally, a gentle smile graced his lips.

“How did you meet her?”

“She moved in as a neighbor about a year ago. First night she was there, we saw each other in the forest. I was hunting there, and she only saw my eyes before running away. I thought that was the end of it. I didn’t know that I would end up making her my everything.”

It was a fond memory. Jovan laughed, and Abhay went silent for a moment. His eyes went up the stairs, and he stood up.

“Everything all right?”

“Yes. I’ll be back.”

He excused himself and went upstairs to check on her. She sounded distressed in their thoughts. Piya turned her head and tried to get up. Abhay was at her side in an instance, easing her back on the bed. Before he let her sit up at all, he checked on her wounds. She was fine, but she kept touching her ears for some reason.

“Are you alright? How do you feel?”

Piya nodded, hugging him. The ringing disappeared again. For now, she assumed it to be related to her head injury. Hopefully it would subside soon.

“Who’s downstairs?”

“Someone you might recognize. You must’ve seen him in my past.” He whispered, giving her a kiss. “Do you need help getting ready? He would love to meet you.”

“No….I’m okay. But can you….stay here while I do?”

“You don’t have to ask. I’ll be here.”

He leaned against the wall next to the closet door. When he held her, her fingers were still shaking. He affirmed to himself that they were to leave the day after tomorrow. She would feel better back at home. Piya wore a simple velvet frock and looked out of the door. Abhay smiled, and ruffled her hair.

“Come. You can hold onto my arm.”

Piya nodded and held him as tight as she could without being conscious of it. As they descended the steps together, she could see who he was talking about. Though the two never talked about Jovan, as Piya didn’t want to repeatedly bring up his past without a real need, there was an implicit understanding that she knew. He didn’t look that different; only the hair was cut short and styled.

“Jovan, this is Piya. My wife. And Piya, this is Jovan, my friend and mentor.”

“Nice to finally meet you.”

“Finally? Has Abhay told you about me?” He laughed. Piya smiled softly and nodded. It wouldn’t be right to spread the news of her meeting with Past with others. Jovan smiled and kissed her hand.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you as well, Piya.”

He was just as sweet as she remembered seeing. Her feet stumbled a little, head spinning. Abhay helped her sit on the couch, and gave her a glass of water.

“I’m surprised, Abhay. This is the first time I’ve seen you like this.”

“Like what?”

“There’s a warmth in your eyes now. Not to mention you’re smiling a lot lately.”

Abhay rolled his eyes. Piya blushed.

“He told me you play the violin. I would have loved to hear you play it. If only…..” His voice trailed, and Piya’s smile began to fade. Abhay held her hand tight.

“When did you come to Vienna?” Abhay asked.

“A couple years ago. I like the atmosphere here. Until those Vitael showed up.” He muttered angrily. “Estelle told me everything about what Maithili wants with you both.”

“We’re heading back the day after tomorrow. It’s not safe here.”

“I was about to advise the same, to leave as soon as you can. She might try to attack you again.”

“Is there any plan? That Iolanda mentioned? The Circle has been awfully silent as of late.”

“You will know more when you go visit the council later. I am not aware of the full details myself, but I will be present too.”

Jovan finished his wine and set the glass down. He looked at Piya, who was silently listening.

“Perhaps I will come visit you two in Dehradun. I do really wish to hear Piya play. Some respite in this rough period.”

“Of course. Do you have any requests?”

“Hmmm…..I’m not good at making such kinds of decisions. Perhaps some excerpts from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony? In the spirit of this beautiful city.”

“Sure.” She replied, with a wide smile. The ringing in her ears intensified and faded again, taking her out of the conversation.

——————————————————————————————————————————

Abhay began to pack their bags after hours. Jovan took his leave after the two caught up on their eternal lives, holding Abhay to a drink at their favorite bar in the future, when all troubles were behind them. His focus shifted when he smelled her blood. Not that he couldn’t normally, but it was stronger near the back of her head. Strangely, she didn’t wake up. If there was pain, she probably would. He sat beside her and turned her head. Trickling down both sides of her neck, from her ears, blood. Piya visibly winced when he put the slightest amount of pressure behind them, where a bruise lay.

“Where did this come from?”

She began to whimper in her sleep. Perhaps the pain was now percieable.

“Piya, it’s okay. I’m here. You’ll be fine.”

Abhay stopped the bleeding somehow, and soaked the blood with a handkerchief. It smelled wrong for some reason. Not appetizing. The bruises disappeared on their own soon after.

“What did you do to her, Maithili?”

——————————————————————————————————————————

“What did I do?”

In her room, Maithili laid on her bed with her head leaning over the edge. She played with her various trinkets and eyed the caged Nature in the corner.

“I’ll break her first. So much that you yourself will come and beg before me for her happiness.” She burst into maniacal laughter and stretched her arms into the air. “Abhayendra, how long will you two run? Sooner or later, you will have to see me again.”

Chapter 91

Greed

Maithili always preferred solemn portraits, the dignified stance that royals should have. They exude power and authority, from which onlookers could stare up to in fear and deference. The brush moved with her desired directions, though painting a scene that she hated but also loved. Two thrones side by side, one for herself and her Abhayendra, and two individuals underneath them by the steps, Mandu and Siddharth. The bristles began to break away from the old brush and bury themselves beneath the freshly laid paint. The imperfections it created frustrated her, raised bumps on an otherwise smooth surface. Down the canvas her nails dragged, picking out the loose bristles away from her work. Then, she lifted the color drenched brush and fixed the places where the paint had been stripped.

Casting the broken bristles aside to the floor aflame, she wondered what and why she was painting. The smell of burnt paint and fibers filled her nose, and those questions filled her head. She never had interest in the illustrative arts, though she held the knowledge and techniques bestowed to her in her childhood. The portrait itself was almost complete, just missing some small details. Once the paint that made up his face dried, she touched her fingers to it.

I want this back. Especially you, Abhayendra.

Truth be told, she had grown lonely. Marginalized and lonely. It was already well known that the Vitael were hated by all supernaturals, the werewolves only at their side for their own benefit. She knew Ayushmaan never really cared for her either. Everyone was using each other.

Family and importance. Those were the two things she lacked and wanted most. And family was the easier one to attain, once Piya was gone of course. Sometimes she sat alone in some corner of their hideout, wondering how her life would have turned out if she stayed silent and let things run their course. Where would she be now? There was a time, where she’d spend endless days and nights thinking about hers and Abhayendra’s future, spending time in the firefly meadow, bringing their children there on outings too. Mandu would still love her. She could joke around with Siddharth like they used to when they were younger. They were hers, first and foremost. Even if she pushed them away. She could always bring them back if she wanted. The loneliness was suffocating at times.

You will come to me on your own, Abhayendra. Very soon.

Only he would get to be at her side as an equal. Her utmost care only belonged to him in the end. He was the only one who ever cared for her as deeply as she wanted someone to. The rest, even the humans that so densely populated the world, would be under her feet. Humans, so weak, full of bias and selfishness. They were no better than any of her kind. Why was it that they could roam free without consequence? Why did her kind have to live in hiding?

They can serve me instead, and make themselves useful.

Human souls could last for generations. A consistent source of power that could be used to rule over all supernaturals as well. Sapping the same from plants and animals was not as sufficient, nor was disposing of human kills on the occasion. With more power, their cage could be broken. They could be free. Others would have to follow.

Something snapped.

The cup of paintbrushes fell to the floor with one swat of her hand, sliding into cracks between the stone tiles. The crash it made when it hit the floor was loud, but no one came to check. Maithili sat there silently for five minutes. Ten minutes. No one walked in, turned the door handle, or even pushed the door a little. She stood up, and clenched her fists. Candles flickered out on their own, darkness shrouding over her eyes and the painting. Any remaining flame gathered in her palm, a small but raging ball of fire. That palm crushed and wrapped itself around the top edge of the portrait, consuming it in the fire of her rage.

Not even ashes remained. The fire was smokeless, bending the rules of natural destruction as she held it still. It wasn’t as messy that way.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

She’s muttering to herself again.

Ayushmaan dropped his hand from the door, taking steps backwards, then leaving for some fresh air. Besides her occasional outbursts and tantrums, it had been quiet. Sometimes water would seep through the ceiling and make a dripping sound just audible enough for their ears to pick up. Otherwise, dead silent. He passed through the halls, greeted with a bow by the other Vitael wandering their hideout. Showing them a hand, he spared no glance. The scars were itching again.

There was a waterfall and accompanying stream just above ground, loud and deafening. He stood upon the tallest rock overlooking the dropping point, watching fish helplessly swimming upstream to avoid the inevitable fall. He smirked, seeing them struggle and without knowing why, fighting so desperately against the inevitable.

He stuck by her side for ages, sharing a single goal. Years of being ostracized and shunned would take a toll on anyone. He remembered when he was young, perhaps about 5 years old, where he had met a wandering warlock while hunting for food with his father. They had been separated due to a chase, and he was looking for him. The warlock had flashed a large smile, and offered to assist him in his search. He agreed without hesitation, and the warlock was kind and calm with him, until he took his hand. Some wiccan could tell who was a traitor and who wasn’t. Even if Ayushmaan had not manifested his own powers yet, the warlock could see through his identity with a mere touch of the hand. The energy and aura was suddenly different.

Ayushmaan could hear that voice clearly.

Get away from me, you spawn of scum!

His father found him in a sobbing mess soon after. It was a harrowing, yet enlightening memory. Ayushmaan touched his face, recalling how his father touched his own runes and said that Ayushmaan should never talk to such people again, calling them weak and obedient. Somehow he knew that Ayushmaan had met the warlock without having been told about it. That night, Ayushmaan was told the story of the first Vitael, the rebels who forged their own path and opened new and unrestrained ways to use magic. The split in the original wiccan coven. He heard stories about the original bloodline, how powerful it was, and what it could do for them.

Until the one bearing that blood was cast out herself. Shunned for falling in love with a human king, for weakening the pure bloodline.

I want you to lead us, my son.

Maithili’s birth was an opportunity for them, a diamond in the rough, a miracle. Her power was something else. For years upon years, he had been playing the long con. He followed her orders, tolerated her attitude and tantrums, stayed quiet like a statue, just to get what he and his father wanted. Just another blood moon was needed. Just one drop of blood in a ritual chalice would be enough to give him the power of her bloodline. He prepared for this moment for years. It was almost time.

“You never deserved this power anyways, my queen. Always brooding over your ex-husband. Under me, he would’ve been gone by now.”

He knew he didn’t have her full trust anymore. In the beginning, she was naive, blinded by greed. She was easy to mold to their whims, and she would trust anyone who gave her what she wanted. She never really grew up. Though at least now, that trust was beginning to waver. He wasn’t blind to that notion.

Leaves of a bush moved behind him. He turned around, and saw the shadow of a furry tail fly by. There was only one werewolf in the area. He sneered, and began to walk towards it.

“I really can’t tolerate you anymore, Alpha. You have no use anymore anyways.”

He followed the paw prints down the hill, catching up to her with teleports that soon allowed him to place a heavy foot on her tail. She yelped and fell back.

“Eavesdroppng again, are we?” He asked, kicking her in the gut. Dipanita shifted back, and his her nude frame behind a bush. Ayushmaan laughed.

“Let’s talk about what you’re planning to do, shall we? Eavesdropping is just a minor offense. You’re playing traitor.”

“Haven’t heard that one before….,” he muttered, rolling his eyes. He kicked a stone under his feet, then to her. “Still hate it nonetheless.”

He spread his palm out towards her, joints contorting in strange ways. The veins in Dipanita’s neck began to bulge and turn a bright red, like they had been filled with fire. It hurt so much, but she couldn’t scream to convey it. The color began to fade from her body.

He never saw a need for this werewolf at all. The weakest of the wolves in general, yet Maithili freed her from her prison in hopes of tormenting Piya somehow. She had done barely anything, and Maithili was too lost in Abhay for her to care.

“I’ve had enough of useless pawns. Go, I’m sure your family is missing you.”

He killed her with little effort, palm closing into a fist as it would around her throat. She fell limp, and a ball of light escaped her chest. Her soul was just as weak as her, but it was better than nothing. Once he took it for himself, the body ignited into a strong pinkish flame, bringing light to his grimace. Just what he needed on this rather chilly night, a warm campfire.
