Another favorite of mine featuring Suraiyya this time with Raj Kapoor on screen and Rafi playing back for him, both rare combinations.

The on-screen camaraderie is evident on screen, RK and Suraiyya seem to be having so much fun, probably because of their off-screen equation. They grew up together and he used to refer to her as 'Kallu' fondly. 😆 Suraiyya was apparently intimidated by the prospect of doing a waltz on screen and also by her partner's superior dancing skills, but none of it mattered. RK is clearly the better dancer but Suraiyya valiantly matches him step for step, and the lilting tune by Naushad just makes this song such a fun, joyous one!

Tarari Tarari - Dastan (1950)

Music: Naushad

Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni

Wow!

Thank you Riya for sharing it with me.

They look so adorable and like dolls.

You are right, their off screen rapport really helped and they are comfortable with each other and truly enjoyed the dance.

Oh the legends! All of them be it RK, DK or DA, were so handsome.

Cheers..

You're so right Raji! RK, even though not my fav, was certainly handsome especially before he devolved into his Chaplinesque persona. All the actors/ actresses from yesteryears have such a quiet dignity, grace and charm about them that's hard to ignore.

Dev - Suraiya's doomed love story makes ones' heart bleed for the young lovers. Dev was bitter that Suraiya did not have the guts to go against her family, particularly her grandmother, but it's so easy for men to rebel. Suraiya had always been under her grandmother's clutches, so it was hard for her, especially in those times. Plus, they had threatened to kill/harm Dev. It sounds filmi and dramatic but it was a real fear for her, and she was made to believe that being apart from him was the best thing for them both.

They both never got over each other though Dev did move on. But he has confessed nothing was as intense as his first love for Suraiya.

They got together dramatically as well - he saved her from drowning while on a shoot on a boat, and she thanked him saying she would have lost her life if he hadn't intervened, and he replied that if she had lost her life, he would have too! 😭 Sounds dramatic in these days and times but that was how much in love they were.

Their clandestine meetings would be arranged and facilitated by friends and Suraiya's mother who favoured the relationship. They would meet on the terrace of her building. She called him Steve - after the hero of a novel that he had lent her (I wish I knew which one!) and he called her Nosey - because of her prominent nose. 😳😆! They would reportedly speak in English with each other in an exaggerated Italian accent! 😆 How I wish some recording existed of this! 😆

Apparently, she never returned the diamond ring he had proposed to her with, not wanting any other woman to have it. And then threw it into the sea as a mark of her love that would endure forever.

I just go awww when I read anecdotes about their love story, and the hopeless romantic in me wishes they are together now in the afterlife! 😭

It's odd how the triumvirate of RK, DK and DA all had tragic romances with Nargis, Madhubala and Suraiya respectively.

Wow, wow and wow!👏

Their love story is one of its kind. The love story itself is ahead of its times.

Such gorgeous people, deserved so much. They surely did not deserve the heart breaks.

Cheers..

Reproducing here an old Stardust interview (1972) of Suraiya.

I got some of the facts wrong- in particular about the ring, looks like evil Granny threw it in the sea,

But Dev does come across as a bit sexist. He apparently slapped her when she turned him down 😲, and of course insisted she give up her career (why were men in those times so intimidated by working women? 🤔)

Also, I was appalled when I read how Suraiya was mistreated (almost abused) by DK and K. Asif! 😲🤬

She was so young when all this happened.

But, she was strong. We must feel proud of her and may be learn a thing or two from her on staying strong and letting bygones be bygones.

Thank you once again for sharing this.🤗

Cheers..

That's so true. She was only 9 when her career took off and only 18 when her romance with Dev began, and it ended in a span of 4 years. Although popular lore says the grandma and uncle were against her union with Dev for religious reasons, the inside fact is that Suraiya was the sole earner for the family, and grandma did not want to let the golden goose loose.

She did endure a lot, and stayed completely humble despite all her popularity. She was called Mallika-e-tarannum and Mallika-e-adakaara but she never believed she was either a great actor or singer.

Suraiya had the most tragic love story. Also, even though Dev Anand married someone else, he never stopped loving Suraiya
