Chapter 13

Abhimanyu woke up every 20 minutes to check the time. Yeh subah kab aayegi?? He wanted to go to hospital and see Akshara. As soon as it was light outside, he got ready and rushed to the hospital. It was still 2 hours till Akshu’s shift but he decided time might go faster if he’s working. He was wrong. The two hours dragged on forever and at 8:50 am he went to his cabin and waited for Akshu to come say hello like she always did before her shift. But she never showed up.

9:05 am. Where is she? Maybe stuck in traffic.

9:30 am. What is she is unwell again and didn’t come?

By 9:45, Abhi could no longer wait and decided to call her. Just then he got a call for an emergency and had to rush to see the patient. He had several back to back emergencies and by the time he got done, it was his lunch time. He decided to check the cafeteria just in case Akshu came late or else he would go to her house.

As soon as he entered the cafeteria, he saw her sitting in a corner table far away from their usual spot. He smiled and went to see her.

“There you are. I been looking for you all day.”

Akshu looked up from her food and gave him a blank cold look. There was no smile on her face, no sign of any friendliness. It was as if she didn’t know him. “Hello. Dr. Abhimanyu. Do you need me for something?”

Abhimanyu was confused. “Akshu, are you okay? What’s wrong?” Dr. Abhimanyu? She hasn’t called him that since their first meeting.

“Akshara. My name is Akshara.” She answered him coldly.

“What’s going on? Are you upset about something? Akshu please tell me what’s going on?” Abhi was getting worried now.

“Dr. Abhimanyu, if you need me for any work then please let me know otherwise I have to go back to my duties. Have a nice day.” Akshu got up and left leaving Abhi sitting there confused and hurt.

Abhimanyu went back to his cabin and thought about Akshu’s behavior. He knew her well and he knew even when she was upset, she was never rude. Yet she was rude to him today. Her usual warmth wasn’t there. Her eyes were empty. Over the last few months, Abhi had started to notice a twinkle in her eyes but that was gone again. He knew something must have happened but what? He had to go talk to her. Abhi had never seen Akshu behave like this with anyone.

The rest of Abhi’s day was spent with patients. He had missed so much of work when Akshu was in the hospital that he had a lot of appointments scheduled. By the time he was done, Akshu had already left.

He went home in a sour mood. He decided to call her later and meet her somewhere that was not the hospital or her home.

Akshu went straight to her room after work, closed the door and fell on her bed crying. She kept seeing Abhi’s hurt face in front of her. I’m sorry for hurting you, Abhi but I have no other choice. I have to stay away from you to protect you and myself. I can’t fall in love with you. I don’t have it in me to love anyone anymore. There’s no space in my heart for love. There’s only pain there and I can’t give you pain. If you really are in love with me, you need to get out of it. Maybe I’m being selfish but I just won’t be able to handle it if you leave me like everyone else has. So it’s better if I create the distance before it becomes impossible to do so. Akshu lay there crying until she heard a knock on her desk asking her to come for dinner. She washed her face, took a deep breath and went to face her family hiding her pain like she has done all her life.

Abhi was sitting in his room distressed thinking about Akshu when Neil came to tell him Manjiri was calling him for dinner.

“Bro, you okay? You look upset.”

“Haan. I’m coming. Tu ja.”

At the dinner table were only Mahima, Parth, Nishta, Neil and Manjiri. Everyone else was still at work.

Abhimanyu joined them but didn’t feel like eating. He moved his food around his plate with his fork.

“Abhimanyu, kya hua? Mood Kyun off hai tumhara?” Parth asked.

“Kuch Nahi. I’m just tired.”

“Haan dekho. You are not even eating your food. What’s wrong, Abhi?” Manjiri went next to him.

“Kuch nahi, maa. I am just tired.”

“Acha I know how to get rid of your tiredness.” Manjiri smiled at him. “Guess what? I called Swarna-ji yesterday to ask her for Akshara’s hand.”

“You did WHAT?” Mahima got up from her chair. “Manjiri, who told you to do that?”

“Arrey Didi. Abhimanyu loves Akshara so why delay this?”

Mahima shook her head. “Manjiri what have you done? I told you to let Abhimanyu to handle it. Abhimanyu tum samjhao apni Maa ko.”

Abhimanyu sat there stunned in silence. So that’s why Akshu was behaving like this.

“Maa. Yeh aap ne theek nahi kiya.” Abhimanyu tried to control his emotions.

“Beta tum bhi mujhe galat samajh rahe ho? Maine tumhari khushi ke liye yeh kiya hai…”

“Aur Akshu ki khushi? Apney ek baar socha Akshu kya chahti hai? Uss ke dil mein kya hai? Woh kya soch rahi hogi ke I don’t care about her feelings? Aap ek baar mujhse pooch toh lehte! Maa, Akshu doosri ladkiyon ki tara nahi hai. Maine kaha tha aap se when I’m ready I’ll tell you. Akshu Kya soch rahi hogi aab? Ke maine ek baar bhi uss se baat nahi ki. Usse kuch poocha nahi aur seedha rishta le gaya. Maa aap ne theek nahi kiya. Na mere saath aur especially na mere Akshu ke saath.” Abhimanyu got up and went to his room in anger. Now it was time for Manjiri to be stunned as Abhimanyu never had gotten angry with his mom before.

“Akshara ke liye apni maa pe gussa kar raha hai.” Manjri cried.

“Theek kar raha hai. Tumne kaam e aisa kiya hai. Maine kaha tha na kuch mat karo. Manjri, Akshu is not like other girls. I told you to give Abhimanyu time. Akshara was finally starting to open up to him and now she will stop trusting him again. How can you do this?” Mahima was worried about her nephew but she was more worried about Akshu.

Abhimanyu sat in his room tearful. “I’m sorry Akshu. I should have told you long time ago how I feel but I wanted you to know me first. I wanted you to learn how to trust me first. I wanted you to come out of your shell. I wanted you to let go off your past and your pain first. I know how hard it is for you to trust anyone and I’m sorry that just when you were starting to trust me, I broke your trust. But I can’t lose you. You can push me away as much as you want but nothing you can do will make me leave you. Nothing. I promise.”

Chalo atleast Abhimanyu ko pata to chala y Akshara is behaving like this.. Abhimanyu 0has a long way to go, Akshara itni jaldi nahi maanegi

Poor abhimanyu. However I loved he is considering what akshu must be feeling.
