I will try my best. But I doubt whether my intellectual capacity will be enough to deconstruct the toilet paper dance. But for you, I will try mere dost.

Chapter 2

The Theory Of The Toilet Paper;

An Attempt at Derridean Deconstruction

The toilet paper could be understood through different perspectives. I have two theories on this majorly.

One, I could see it as an attempt at opening our eyes towards the neo-colonialism in terms of westernisation of the Indian way of life and the increasing consumerism in a globalized world. If we look at the history of Indian sanitary products, toilet paper was not essentially part of it. Even though the use of water is much more hygienic, we started imitating the west without any critical thought that it became necessary part of our lives. Dipankar Gupta refers to this as westoxication.

Another view is that it shows the power of the masses. Each one's opinion does not matter, but when masses come together they can start a revolution. Similarly tissue papers are extremely flimsy, but once they are banded together it can be strong. It's the makers appreciation for the audience I believe. The stronger we audience hold on to the show they will be able to provide us with so much joy and wonderment, just like the dance.

PS: I hope I was able to do justice. Do share your thoughts.

What? I need to do a lot more research and literature review to even begin to understand all the deeper and symbolical meaning of love in this show. It is the most sophisticated aspect. I will need a lot of time and a lot more episodes to do that. May be in the tenth chapter.

I loveeee ur theory.

I had initially thought toilet paper here was a symbol of extreme brainstorming done by the creative team. 😆

But neo -colonialism is extremely apt here.

How comprehensive analysis are done in this series. I LOVE IT SO MUCH 😭

WHY YRKKH IS THE CLASSIC SHOW INDIA HAS EVER PRODUCED

Chapter 1

It was by accident I came across this show after season 3 began with a new set of characters. I was attracted to it because of Harshad Chopda and expected the show to make some sense in the midst of hundreds of other cheesy over the top dramatic shows. I was in for a shock. The show turned out to be one of the best with deeper meanings and relevance for decolonisation, power relations and its engagement with masculine sensitivity.

Since some of us are so blinded by our education which is still influenced by our erstwhile colonial masters and western discourse of feminism, we failed to understand what it actually stood for. As Spivak pointed out, I tried to understand the show from an oriental perspective rather than through a western academic lens. Through out the discussion we always focused on Abhimanyu's actions. Isn't that our inherent bias? We knowingly did not give Akshara any agency when she is the subject. Why was her voice not important to us? Why didn't we give her the agency and responsibility for the miserable life she was leading and blamed it all on Abhimanyu? Is this our way of suppressing the subaltern voice? (Akshu is the subaltern here, in case you have a doubt)

Now, discussing about the power relations of the structure. The show clearly demonstrates the fate of the proletariat, waiting outside the Gopi mask festival for some grains which the bourgeois capitalist enterprises have kept away from them. Here they are still stuck in the false consciousness and have not developed to start the proletarian revolution as Marx would suggest. But how will they transform into a class for itself from the state of a class in itself? The answer is Akshara. Akshara is the organic intellectual that Gramsci talks about who will help the proletariat gain the true ideology to fight the cultural and structural hegemony of the bourgeois.

Engaging with masculine sensibility is where Abhimanyu comes in. He is not the toxic alpha male who we see in Indian movies and shows. He cries. The general masculine idea of "boys don't cry" and its shackles that trap men into channeling their emotions into aggressiveness in terms of violence against women and other genders have been shatterd by the show. Abhimanyu is the post modern man.

Right now, this is it. With the show going on if people would like to read I will write more chapters.

Wow, this is too good 🤣

But seriously, I really appreciate your writing and intelligent play of words in pointing out the crazy things they show, by relating it to sociology theories 👏👏👏

Kudos!! It was great to read. Please do write more 😳

Omg, Dipankar Gupta! He came to give us a guest lecture once, and one of our courses on Modernity had some of his works as readings!

Your skill at academic writing is great, especially involving the things they show us 🤣👍🏼👏

Chapter 3

Surveillance and Punishment;

A Foucauldian Analysis

In his primary work Discipline and Punish, Foucault discusses about Benthem's panopticon. The concept of an architecture with a central tower that can enhance surveillance and ensure discipline in prisoners. In the modern world increasing use of digital technology has permeated every aspect of our lives, every structure we inhabit have become a panopticon.

Aarohi's current predicament is a perfect case study for this. Her indisciplined life has been under the surveillance of CCTV cameras, Neil, Mahima and Shefali. This surveillance is what will result in the penalisation and disciplining of Aarohi. Chomsky suggests the same about the power of surveillance.

Foucault also argues knowledge is power. Till now, Abhimanyu has been devoid of knowledge about so many aspects. I think the creatives are exploring this by depicting the power he acquires with gaining the knowledge, take smart decisions and use it in a positive way, since Foucault also suggests power can be positive as well.

PS: Today tho my academic juices are flowing.
