Because he did not hardsell himself nor licked boots of any political party. Today actors get Padma award for merely licking boots of ruling party and posting tweets for ruling party online.
Wow! What a career! What accomplishments ⭐️
Didn't know he was awarded OBE, first Asian to receive for acting, also first Asian to get British and Canadian Academy Award nominations 👏
His career spanned from 1961 to 2011 (four years before his death at the age of 86) and was awarded Padma Shri posthumously in 2016
Till then only handful of Flimfare award nominations and one win for
Shatranj Ke Khiladi ( must watch movie for every Indian imo) as far as Indian awards are concerned
So he has been ignored for all these years, decades actually by his homeland... It's not something that's happening just today
The homeland never honoured talent but connections. Be it private awards like Filmfare or govt awards which are heavily politicised and depend on networking.
Having said that even Jaffery was less available to Indian media nor revisited his roots.
He is from Malerkotla in Punjab. How many know this? He never talked about roots or revisited his native place the way Dharmendra still visits his village in Punjab.
He always had an air of elitism and spoke with a certain accent.
He was handsome, talented but how much effort did he make to connect with masses?
I dislike Anupam Kher but he does connect to masses and his home town a lot.
One may not kiss ass of politicians and editors but one can make effort to keep connected to public.
I do admire him for doing his work quietly and not being as bitter and obnoxious as Naaeeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak, who are well connected, got favours from govt, won awards, got positions at NSD and are still bitter, insult seniors, juniors and contemporaries alike. Pseudo intellectuals even falsify history to create political controversies.
Anyway an OBE is anyday bigger achievement than chamcha awards like Padma or paan masala, Lux sabun awards.

Not asking about your fav or who was the better actress. Just asking who was more popular, the bigger superstar, and had more cultural impact...
