In the early days, there used to be unlimited day tests - ie in late 18th & early 19th century, you can still read about them in Wisden & other sites. Then there was 10 days tests or something, there have been tests where both teams agreed to a draw - so that they can go ahead & play the next test match, for which they had to travel smiley37 This is all pre-1945. Later it came down to 5 days - which is has been set.

Just like when ODI's started - it was 60 overs at first, next 55 overs, later 50 overs - which has become the standard now.

Really? 🤔 But I heard that 4 day tests were common in 1930-70 era.. Uske Baad 5 day started becoming the norm and now again they wanna bring it back 😆 For the baccha teams to have a fair chance. So much debate about this uff I'm tired of it 🤣

Yeah the timeless tests I've heard stories about them 😆

Honestly I have no idea how people watched them or players played them, main to sochkar hi thak jaati hoon 🤭🤣

The 4 day test have been more like special consideration ones off-late, like ICC giving permission for 2 teams to go ahead. The last time it happened was Eng v Ireland one. There have been 3 day test matches too until 70's 😆 Since 1979 - 5 day tests have been the norm, there wasn't any set no.of days until then - you can have test for 3 days, 4 days, 5 or 6 as well so in a way I was wrong as I made a broad statement (I will edit in order to avoid confusion for people, maaphi de do) 🤣 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Test_cricket

Just have a look at this scorecard (1930) - https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/england-tour-of-west-indies-1929-30-61749/west-indies-vs-england-4th-test-62579/full-scorecard

few more scorecards, take a look at the no.of days:

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/pakistan-tour-of-west-indies-1957-58-61496/west-indies-vs-pakistan-1st-test-62835/full-scorecard

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/australia-tour-of-west-indies-1955-61385/west-indies-vs-australia-4th-test-62792/full-scorecard

This article explains well about the no.of days tests - https://sportstar.thehindu.com/cricket/duration-of-test-matches/article22443206.ece
