Yes they were mentioning some of his records today, he's been amazing 👏🥳

Jokes aside, 4 day tests used to be pretty common but now 5 days have become the standard. It's too exhausting for the players otherwise 😅

@b: that's why the designated time is there for each innings na. Once time ends, innings is over regardless of wickets remaining. Just like normal T20 you know. Baaki formats have fixed overs, test has fixed time.

Dear Bee ..I appreciate your interest in cricket ❤️❤️🤗

So can the game even finish before 5 days? And what if everyone is still not out after 5 days?

If everyone is not out in 5 days, the game will end up in a draw.

To get a result, winning team has to get the opponents all out in both their innings and required to chase the target away before the end of 5th day.

Under normal conditions 90 overs are allocated to play each day. Because of weather conditions this can be changed and teams have to live with the changed overs.

Bottom line is, a test match can be won in 2 days or it can end up in a draw after playing all 5 days.

There are some other variations such as declaring an innings, follow on etc,. We can talk about them as we go.

Cheers..

Match will be considered as a draw aka no result. So for instance, there are 3 matches in a series, both the teams win one match each & the last one has no result. The series ends as 1-1, both share the trophy.

ICC brought in this WTC just lately, so in this case points will be share by both the teams.

In cricket language, draw & tied are different meanings. Draw means no result & is used only in test matches. Tied refers to both teams ending the match on the same score, this term is used for all versions of the game.

As we are talking about test matches, a match is considered as tied if & only both teams are all out on the same score. There have been only 2 tied test matches in over 100 years cricketing history. West Indies v Australia around 1960 & India v Australia in 80's

-> And regarding your other question yes, match can finish on the very day it started itself, if all the innings are completed in a single day, which is quite rare but there have been plenty of 2 & 3 day finishes.

4 days tests were rare but there were also 3 day tests, this is a suggestion which has divided opinion. Only the county/domestic First Class matches are held for 4 days.

One of the famous opinion now is to make tests as 4 days tests for low test ranked teams like Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, Ireland.

In the early days, there used to be unlimited day tests - ie in late 18th & early 19th century, you can still read about them in Wisden & other sites. Then there was 10 days tests or something, there have been tests where both teams agreed to a draw - so that they can go ahead & play the next test match, for which they had to travel smiley37 This is all pre-1945. Later it came down to 5 days - which is has been set.

Just like when ODI's started - it was 60 overs at first, next 55 overs, later 50 overs - which has become the standard now.

How much time for each innings then?

There is no preset limit for each innings, its either until all of the batsmen are out or the batting team declares on a score & asks the opponents to bat. If desired a team can bat all 5 days.

In a single day 90 overs need to be bowled, if there are no weather interruptions. Anything less can bring in a fine for the bowling team captain & the team as well.

In late 90's, Sri Lanka once batted over 270 overs & scored 900+ runs & match ended in a draw, they just batted on & on just for the sake of records. This is the match I was referring to - https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/india-tour-of-sri-lanka-1997-62338/sri-lanka-vs-india-1st-test-63762/full-scorecard

This is probably the longest innings since 1950's I think.
