Audience cares about entertainment.

Their right to do so. It's their money.

Facts. Good looks for South Asians means fair skin and light eyes. This is why Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor continued to give hits despite gaining weight or growing old in 60s. People were fascinated with Raj Kapoor's fair skin and blue green eyes.

Even Hema Malini admitted she fell for Dharam seeing his fair complexion. He was a hatta katta gora chitta Punjabi Jat.

A lot of Indians have fascination for Pakistani actors too primarily for their complexion. Fawad, Mahira, Sanam etc are called gorgeous due to their fair skin. And the only reason to obsess over Katrina Kaif is also her white skin. Elli, Nora, Jacqueline also made it mainly due to their fair skin and not just dance skills.

General answer seems looks, because in BW mediocre sells.

Personally for me need good acting and then good looks, also the actors should match the story. For me story is the king/queen.

Odd . Dharam looked a common shade of brown onscreen.

I love Raj Kapoor in black and white films but I can't watch him in colour because of those blue eyes. They looked weird on him. Maybe because of that thick black moustache. Very few people can pull off blue eyes and black hair.

Good acting I think, like there are loads of actors who aren't conventionally so good looking who did well due to having good screen presence/acting, whereas in so many decades of BW I can only think of Katrina who made it big despite legitimately terrible acting 😆

Ofcourse looks.

We have Nora Fatehi and Jacqueline Fernandez in bollywood due to this reason.

Dharam was quite a hit with ladies back then. Jaya Bhaduri (Bachchan) also called him Greek god. Dev Anand, Kapoors, Vinod Khanna were also Punjabi and comparatively tall, fairer.

Dharmendra was fitter than Kapoors so thanks to his smile, fair skin and muscular frame women liked him a lot.

The place where Hema comes from, does not always have men of Dharam's complexion. So I guess she must have found him fairer when his skin colour seems normal shade of brown to us.

People were crazy for Shashi Kapoor too because of his chiselled face and fair skin.

I feel main reasons why people from Punjab, Himachal, J&K made it in TV, film industry in significant numbers is due to the comparatively lighter skin tone that people from these regions usually have.

The absolute fetish people have for Kashmiris in particular is also due to their fair skin.
