“Hello Harinee? How are you? Any reason for this call?” The query was unanswered. A click from the other side indicated that the call had been disconnected.

He called back. A mechanical voice replied saying that the number was switched off.

Virat felt a sense of intense foreboding at the call. Harinee should have been at the school at this time. Anyway, it could have been nothing at all. Fishing out his mobile, he dialed Dr Pulkit’s number.

“Hello, Jeeju?”

“Yes, Virat? Is everything OK? Any reason for calling now? I am heading for a surgery…”

“Oh no, nothing. Just remembered something. I think I will call you back when you are free!”

Virat disconnected with a vague sense of disquiet. Pulkit was never this curt. Maybe he was busy?

He decided to call Devyani.

The call was answered after a few rings.

“Hello Veeru…”

“Hi Devi Tai..how are things? How is Harinee? Just thought to check up on you all…”

“Everything is fine Veeru..Harinee is at school. And Pulkit is at the hospital!”

So that settled it. Harinee had called him from someone else’s mobile. He could never mistake her voice. Possibly a prank? Or a mistake? Then why was the number switched off? Battery drained off? Quite normal. He rebuked himself mentally. But there was something, that nagging feeling, that sixth sense that something was wrong.

He waited for an hour and again called Pulkit, hoping that the surgery would be over.

“What is it, Virat? I told you I am busy!”

“Nothing big, Jeeju. Just wanted to wish Sangita on her birthday!”

A tiny moment of hesitation, then Pulkit answered back.

“Yes, thank you so much. She will be very happy. I will certainly tell her. No, don’t call her, she is not at home. And now, may I go back to my work?”

Something was wrong. For once Virat was glad that his sixth sense was justified. Barking a few commands at his subordinate officer, Virat decided to check out himself.

The inspector was back within an hour with a trace on that number. The number belonged to a stranger and its last known location was Nagpur Hospital.

So where was Harinee? According to Devi, she was at school. But the phone call said otherwise. And Pulkit had erred on his wife’s name purposely.

Virat quickly changed into plain clothes and asked for an unmarked vehicle. The inspector looked up in alarm.

“Sir, what’s the plan?”

“Nothing. I could be wrong. I will be gone for a few hours at the max!

Virat never realized how far he was from reality at that instant...
