Seasons 5-6, I didn't watch too religiously. Stefan and Caroline together made me pukish. Still does.

In the later seasons the main cast was-

Stefan

Damon

Caroline

Alaric

Bonie

Enzo

for one season- Kai and his siblings

One season- sirens and I think then they had brought in Stefan Damon's mother and Valerie (I didn't watch those seasons)

yes, travellers made this whole prophecy thing that the universe will always conspire to get the doppelgängers together and therefore Stefan and Elena are meant to be together, and they showed them flashes of a happy life together.

Jeremy was side lined big time so the actor went on and did other projects and then came back for Nina's last episode when they had to shoot the good bye scene

Stefan.

He went out of town with Klaus in exchange of cure for Damon

Then when Stefan was missing because of Silas, Damon was busy having sex with Elena and didn't bother to check on Stefan

other than this they were equally good to each other

Seasons 7-8 has more of their bromance but I didn't watch those seasons at all
