Yes definitely. Director should push actors to the point they can handle, talk to them & ease them into it....use good camera work.
You know regarding that discomfort we talked about - I think that is at the heart of all of Neil's acting woes. That 'persona' he tries to put on - that makes him look concious, artificial and compromises with his expressions and dialogue delivery. When I joined the forum, I had written a post on that - but nobody seemed to agree with me.....so I thought it was just me feeling it.
I remember how he was in DABH - after he befriends the FL he was shown to be soft-hearted, polite and respectful - and Neil managed to pull off that persona convincingly and with none of the discomfort we see in Virat. All he had to do was repeat the performance in ghum. But here he over-thought and tried too hard. I feel that might be because he wasn't very confident - 13 years in the industry and no lead roles. Might have been too desperate to be accepted as the ML. I remember the first scene I watched in ghum was the GC scene when Sai asks him to run away from the marriage - I was surprised at Neil's artificiality....it put me off from watching any further. If not for Sai, I would have stopped watching the show. Even in their famous fights, I remember getting annoyed that Neil was spoiling the scene ....when Ayesha was acting so well. I now see that the same self-consciousness was at play there too. In that sense, even the previous director did not do a good job of helping him loosen up, or give him assurance (although he might have helped with the characterization). He did better with Ayesha. I think it is because of this that I like Neil better now....I think with his role becoming accepted, he has grown slightly in confidence ....and it is coming across in a few scenes good scenes now.....it looks more natural...and his emotions are looking less artificial. But he is still concious in the family scenes ....in his chakkar of pulling off a certain persona....It's not that he can't pull it off....he did it in DABH...but despite how it looks, somwhere Neil certainly has confidence issues ....
Talking of persona.....how can one forget ASR. Every scene, every shot the persona screamed ASR and with such conviction that we were indeed seeing a real person called ASR. And it maintained until the end.....The actor looks exactly opposite....droopy eyes, lazy demeanor , unkempt hair 😆.
Long essay over....fell free to skip if you wish 😆
So true...He does look artificial...his scenes comes out acted and thats frustrating... I mean everything looks put up..Still I liked him before the alta episodes...After that I started seeing what you are saying here...May be he has his zone and he does not want to come out from it...With Ayesha the thing is she is a learner...constantly and throughout, so the director could help her..She has grown and way too much...I would really like to see her working with better directors...Ekta brings out the best in actors or even Gul.. FOr Neil, I think he is limited...Ghum might just be his best shot...That way I found Mohit a great actor and Samrat could have become, given they gave him good direction and Screen space..
I remember in Shivika scenes, Nakuul would always improvise the scenes, you see while hugging her, he would drop her a light kiss, sometimes continuous ones on her head..to make it look beautiful and absolutely emotional. There was nothing way beyond in that show, just that the actors looked natural and camera angles were top notch. There is just one scene where he touches her cheeks and blows in her ear and says , Kuch hua, she says yes and he says did you like it...It was so well done...I was amazed... Even there reconciliation scenes, the emotional aspect of reunion was covered so well by the director..You see they all do cheat shots... Neil toh is not even comfortable going as close to get a cheat shot, forget about actual shot.
ASR well, Sanaya would always say, Barun is nothing , nothing close to larger than life ASR. He is not attractive, he is not so well kempt.. You see they would make fun of his weird hair and stubble.. ASR was class apart...Infact the guy hardly got dialogues... But then he stole it all with his same droopy eyes..Barun always gave a lot of credit to the director and creatives of the show... Infact he gave it all to them..since he did say too many times he is very close what he played in MAMR. Witty and fun...He did the same in his previous show as well..KSG was supposed to ASR, this guy was picked up at the end...and they thought show might not go beyond 6 months...But when it surpassed Balika Vadhu for few week, these guys were themselves surprised and this guy got bored...🤣
