There r very few shows which I can relate to..and even in them, I relate to certain aspects only..in entirely no show is gonna be rocking , appealing to masses and classes both, with the right balance..like for me , I love sai giving it bk to her in laws ..bec I can never express myself nicely , talk my heart out in the fear of hurting people and causing a fight..I love that aspect in people..that they can talk fearlessly..but at the same time I hate the family bhakt husband.one who can't take a stand for his wife n keeps getting fooled by the vamp n his family.

This is how the people are , aren't they ? A mix of everything ..we need to filter out ..I know common people don't understand right and wrong ..but there r a LOT of things which r subjective in nature and open to interpretation. Like in the #1 show , a domesticated lady is being taunted as a maid ..she does take the big step of divorce but then stay in the same house as her in laws , AND her ex husband with his present wife..WHO does that ? But still ppl relate to her troubles In a way that home makers r looked down upon and they sacrifice a lot for their children and family but it's never appreciated .

So an individual cannot decide what's progressive and whats regressive . If they show a "modern " woman , she faces the same issues as a housewife isn't it ? N isn't it the reality? Domestic abuse is common in higher strata of the society too....only its form changes.. women still need the courage to move out..if they do they face the same challenges.. emotionally all of us r same right? A modern independent woman may still feel the same hurt with the ema of her husband. Real shows like crime patrol as more disturbing than itv dramas.

Coming to whether it's ok to show all this..yes they have to show it.. ..they r takin baby steps towards establishing the role of women in a family but they are..Basically controversial content works..thy make simple things controversial for people to watch.. they add a little suspense n the moment audience connect to the characters, they can show whatever ..Problem is where to draw the line.."flawed humans" mein toh sab kuch aa gaya.

Why these shows r popular ? There is a section of audience who doesn't watch all this..then there is us , who watch it and don't care , move on with our daily routine ..Then there are middle class and ppl in rural areas... housewives who watch it for entertainment ..they fantasize the lives of these characters.. also they watch it as if it's real..like they watch big boss..they think it's real..I'd say , not just itv but generally the overexposure of internet , smartphone , films , web shows etc is spoiling the young minds... Basically at their age they r unable to filter , they haven't experienced the real life enuf to make any judgement . So they must strive for a balance but then..the money factor comes in. It's all very complex

Very Nice post!❤️

I can see even in the forum..each person relating to some part of ghum....though not all.

I understand that people do stay in abusive relationships ...for various reasons...it is not easy to just come out..could be emotions, actual constraints,But why is domestic abuse not called out...why is it not projected as vile in the show...Why is it promoted as an eternal love story.

It is better to show such things than to brush it off and pretennd it doesnt exist(domestic abuse). But it has to be addressed? That it is wrong....why it is wrong...how does the victim feel? Without it, would it not be like saying ok this is how it is...its worth all the humiliation? Moreover, many victims stay in these relationships because they dont have family support, they dont have very close relationships, or even have low self-esteem - and you are right, it happens even in higher strata of society. Will it not be helpful if the affects of abuse is shown. If Virats abuse was dealt with properly...and not treated casually? Is it not necessary to send awareness...that men should not abuse?

I had written a long post in reply to this but it got lost! Anyways to make it short, I think people watch shows for entertainment only. And compared to other shows this has nothing so drastic. This forum calls Virats antics as domestic violence. However there are shows that show MLs committing things like rape. I remember a show where the ML in a hate marriage tries to force himself on his bride. He is later redeemed and goes on to become a grt hero. So in actual the audience doesn't even feel Virat is doing anything so grtly wrong!! And as I told earlier they just watch it let go and do not over analyse things like we do on this forum! So they say yeh is too much and let it go. Be it the FLs over the top care and love or the MLs ott hatred and revenge.

One more thing that came to my mind is that people who have earlier watched kd and who know what kind of toxicity they are going to show still watch it. So it just means that these kinds of stories sells and the makers are wanting g to make big money out of it. If we or anybody else is expecting moral science classes in these shows, we r fooling ourselves!

True that lot of times, Virat's abuse is not taken seriously since it is present in one form or other in all the shows....just like in-laws harassment of DIL is also staple of all ITV shows. There is that factor there.

But then we are not going to be influenced by it either....can't say the same of other sections of audience.

Years back I had a conversation with an actor on twitter.. I asked him why most of the shows are so regressive and unrealistic.. To which he answered back that this is what audience want to watch.. Then I told him because audience have very little choice..He didn't answer anything.. 😃

I agree that we have very little influence from TV shows.. But teens are not like that.. They tend to romanticise anything is being shown on TV.. though now a days girls more well read and intelligent.. But channel and PH certain holds some social responsibility.. Certain issues has to be censored.. Ghum has normalised almost every sensitive issues shown till date ..Domestic abuse, Honour killing and kidnapping what not 🤢👎🏼

There was a serial that came long time back, was a hit with audience. They came up with season 2 recently too but this one flopped. Maybe the audience are getting better with their choices.

In that serial, an independent girl is stalked by a goon, harassed, eventually he marries her. His family and himself are not educated, the girl is. Father is a politician goon. With time, she falls in love with him.

This plot is equivalent to a story where they show Sai and Jagtap marrying and Sai falling in love with him.

The problem is with people's mindset, patriarchal society and how they buy and consume such stuff.

You may be right.

Somehow ghum feels very disturbing....may be because it looks very real?
