Yes if women stop moving to in laws place, stop acquiring the surname of husband family then the whole concept of kanya daan as well as marriage is illogical.

I for one, definitely want this custom of girl in every faith leaving her house after marriage to stop. Don’t know how the resultant society would be, but let’s see.

Better still

Kanyā (कन्या).—f.

(-nyā) 1. A girl nine years old, a virgin. 2. A name of Durga. 3. The sign of the zodiac, Virgo. 4. The socotrine aloe (Aloes perfoliata.) 6. Large cardamoms. 7. A species of metre of four lines, with four syllables in each. 3. A parasite plant. E. kan to shine, Unadi affix yak, fem. ṭāp.

I think in context bride's father is not daan-ing the zodiac sign or cardamoms or poetry or a parasite plant.

Kanya can be taken as girl also. The point is it is always putr for sons. So if it was just about making the daughter happy, why not putri? Why kanya which also signifies her virgin status?

Words matter.

the resultant society would look like every society in which a couple sets up their own home after marriage. Examples abound in the wider world and in India.

Kanya is a Sanskrit word. How did the Zodiac sign come into this? 😆

You are not helping your case by calling Kanya some random names like cardamoms and parasite plants.

Just because you have google at your fingertips doesn’t mean you have to misuse it like this to copy paste such laughable nonsense and make a mockery of yourself.

If you don’t know something, don’t just jump in just because you have the urge to attack some stranger on a random platform.

Lol. I posted the exact same thing. The person googled Kanya the Hindi meanings I guess. 😕

Kanya isn’t a Hindi word for crying out loud. Just because it’s been adopted into Hindi which came into existence eons after Sanskrit, doesn’t mean it becomes a Hindi word. Kanyadaan’s been there before the birth of Hindi.

Citations that it was happening prior to Manusmriti?

Happy to do that. Find a post graduate studies page on Women in Vedic era which precedes Manusmriti era.

Will not give you random website links, as we see a lot of opinionated views on almost all non Indic history sites. But still if you just Google hindu women in Vedic era , you would know a general opinion how things were.

Gosh, this is a subset of collection of synonyms of word Kanya in Sanskrit.

You do know right that the text for hindi and Sanskrit are same. I hope you atleast know that.

And hopefully you know that there is a Kanya rashi in Hindu astrology which we didn’t copy from western dictionaries as they didn’t exist at that time when we defined astrology.

So? 🤔 Gosh why are you embarrassing yourself like this on an open forum? Text is the same means meanings are also same? Boy! 😳

What I know is not important. What is more important is you knowing about what you know and not just jumping in with half knowledge .

Why didn’t they name the ritual as putri daan instead of Kanyadaan? This is something you really need to time travel and find yeah.

There is a lot of meaning associated with our rituals and it’s naming and there is a lot of text to study these as well. Help yourself.

Who ever reads your post will know, who has half knowledge.

You are not even open to know about alternate meaning of term Kanya as per Sanskrit text. You want to hang on to the virgin word, we get it.
