Why wasn't Aishwarya cast in Neerja instead of Sonam Kapoor?

Neerja is one of the only good Sonam films (besides Raanjhanaa) but I can't help but wonder why it wasn't given to a stronger actress like Aishwarya. Thoughts?

I wonder why Mughal-e-Azam, Guide, Pyasa etc. weren't all given to Aishwarya. What do you think?
