Chapter 72

Bonds, Old and New

Absences for orchestra rehearsals were pretty uncommon, moreso those without a proper excuse. A death, even rarer. Their professor took note of the low morale of the group, and decided to end rehearsal for today. No one could give their best. Piya stared at the empty chair a few chairs over from her, that once belonged to one of the other violinists.

Last night, two bodies were found in the forest. A dead couple, dead with no obvious signs of harm. The girl had been found without clothing. It was a strange occurrence to everyone, including Piya.

She packed up her things, and looked over at the empty chair again. To think, just two days before they were all present and preparing for their next concert at the end of the year. It was the only news circulating on campus. Piya walked slowly and gazed suspiciously at any sudden movements, as if she were very close to becoming the next victim.

More people around, the better. The canteen was full, all eyes glued on the single television mounted high on the wall. Kabir waved her over to their table, just within earshot of the television. The post-mortem of both individuals was being conducted.

“It’s so unsettling, na? How they died? No one can figure it out.” Ruhi whispered.

Misha nodded and munched away at her chips. Piya’s heart raced. She gripped her bag in her lap, and contemplated looking for Abhay.

“Like a ghost or something killed them. God, I sound like papa....” Misha smacked her forehead, then looked at Piya. “Are you okay, Piya? You actually look like a ghost.”

“Me….?”

“She was also a music student....one of our classmates.” Kabir chided. “It feels strange and saddening, even though neither of us knew her that well.”

Piya hastily nodded in agreement. But she was thinking about something else. How Misha’s conspiracy theories could be closer to the truth than they thought.

Where are you, Abhay?

Abhay was the lesser, but other significant news of the day. He was attending classes in-person for his last semester, only for Piya’s safety.

Her phone buzzed. While the others discussed, she checked it under the table, not in the least way inconspicuous. Abhay messaged, asking her to meet him in one of the smaller practice rooms.

“I’ll just be back, guys. Two minutes.”

Piya rushed off without a single thought, and before they could say anything. Several girls made faces as she walked by, the news of her and Abhay’s relationship out in the open and sparking quite enough jealousy amongst the other women at this college. He pulled her inside from the hallway, his expression washing over in relief.

She fell into the safety of his arms, those arms which tightened around her waist and pulled her close.

“What happened? Is everything okay?” She asked.

“Everything is fine. I just....wanted to see you. Alone.”

Piya was either seeing things, or Abhay Raichand was blushing. She shook her head, shoulders relaxed, and tried to smile a little.

“I’m sorry. When you’re not nearby, I get anxious.” Abhay whispered, touching their foreheads together.

He was very worried for her since this whole fiasco began. But he couldn’t just sit in with her during classes. Time like this, in between, was the only way.

“The feeling is mutual....”

He kissed her forehead, and looked around. There were shadows of people just barely peeking through the window. At least he could be thankful that the rooms were soundproof. He loosened his hold.

“Did I disturb you?”

“No. I was just in the canteen with the others. The TV.....it’s everywhere.”

“I know. It’s going to be a high profile case solely because no human or natural cause could have caused it. The Circle is taking care of it as we speak.”

Piya nodded, though with little understanding of The Circle and their methods she couldn’t calm down. Abhay cupped her cheeks and brushed his thumbs over them.

“You’re not alone, remember? I won’t let anything happen to you.”

“I know.” She said firmly, looking deep into his eyes. She stood on her toes, and kissed the tip of his nose.

“Can we bunk class?”

“Not a good look for a National Merit scholarship student.” He chuckled. “It’s only one more—”

“I rather stay here.”

She looked at the piano behind them, and puffed her cheeks. Abhay laughed deeply.

“Piya.....”

“Okay fine I’m going. No need to scold me, Mr. Raichand.” She kissed him one more time. “I’ll see you later. Bye.”

“Bye.”

Abhay watched her leave, exiting the room himself after a few minutes. The spectators outside scattered off into different directions, pretending to not know what they saw. Abhay could care less. All he thought about was how to best protect her. Maithili already killed two, and Piya wasn’t different than them. But the incentive to kill her was.

Clothes, or a soul capable of causing mass destruction if fallen into the wrong hands.

She’d always choose the latter.

——————————————————————

Siddharth kept his thoughts clear, and his phone nearby. Office work came by slowly today. He didn’t even need to come here. But Mandu insisted, after spending half of the night alone in their room.

Even now, she was alone at home. Maithili was roaming free, and he didn’t like any of it.

Is everything okay at home, my love?, he thought to her. It took a few minutes to hear her reply.

Everything is okay.

Even the voice of her mind sounded unsure. He shut his laptop and packed his things. Within the next twenty minutes, he reached home.

Mandu was in the living room, curled up on the floor and watching the news. The same murder dominated the press, and she knew who the culprit was.

Siddharth undid his tie and rested his arms around her shoulders.

“Are you feeling alright?” He asked, touching her hair. Mandu looked over and nodded.

“You’re back early?”

“I was missing you.”

He played with a lock of hair that dangled to the side of her eyes and tuned the reporters on the tv screen out.

“One night free and she’s already killing people.” Mandu despondently muttered.

“You know, I thought she’d try to find us. Since she didn’t go to Ayushmaan.....”

“Why would she? Maybe for Abhay, but us?” She scoffed, and turned her head towards the window. “I don’t want her near him either. He’s suffered enough because of her.”

She was wrong. Maithili was interested in seeing them. Lucky for her, the Raichand family was well known around these parts. A chill went up Mandu’s spine, a familiar chill. She stood up and walked upstairs, towards the main balcony. Siddharth followed, and they stared out into the trees together.

Someone is there.....

A feeling of remembrance. Her eyes searched for its cause.

You love proving me wrong.

Maithili stood on the ground, looking up at her sister, just out of sight. A big mansion, and no dearth of money, love, or beauty. The garden beyond beautiful. Powers that she never had before. She wondered which one of them could win in combat, but that was a test for another time. She looked at Siddharth, who emerged from behind Mandu, as they shared an eye lock, and a hug.

So many years together.

We could’ve had the same, Abhayendra. An eternity of love. And once again didi, you got something I couldn’t.

She couldn’t sense the one she truly wanted to visit anywhere nearby, and turned heel towards the city. There was lot she wanted to catch up on in this time, all on her own. This world functioned differently. And if she ran into Piya during that time, well then that would be the icing on the cake.

——————————————————————

“Piya dear, can I ask for a small favor?”

Piya nodded with a smile, and set her stack of books and music sheets down on the table nearby.

“Sure Ms. Julie. What is it?”

“Can you watch the front desk for some twenty minutes? I have something to discuss with Mr. D’ Souza. And my assistant is out sick today.”

“Of course. Let me just drop these off in the classroom first.”

“No rush, dear.”

It was a slow afternoon, and her classes had ended for the day. Divya suggested reorganizing the classroom to bide the rest of their time. Piya dropped off the materials, told them that she would be back in a few minutes, and took a seat at the front desk. It was unlikely that anyone would come in at this time anyways. Her attention focused solely on a spherical paperweight resting on the desk for the first ten minutes, and not towards the door opening right after.

“Excuse me?”

The velvet voice rolled off the lady’s tongue, so smoothly that it could put anyone into a trance. Piya look up quickly, placing the paperweight back in its place.

“Hello. May I help y—-“

There was no one in front of her. She heard a voice for sure. Piya stood up and looked around, at the swinging door. It freaked her out for a second, but she thought nothing more of it and went back to the chair. The floor was dotting red underneath her fingers.

Her right hand felt warm and damp. Her brows furrowed. She looked down at the desk to find a growing pool of blood seeping into the cracks of wood.

Blood?

Her right arm was covered in it, and looked like it was slashed wide open from the center. Her nerves caught up with her eyes and suddenly everything burned and invited pain. Piya held onto her arm, and shrieked. Ms. Julie hurried over, as did Mr. D’Souza and the other staff, and gasped in horror. Divya pulled off her scarf and tied it taught around Piya’s arms to slow the bleeding.

“Piya, please let go off your arm. Let me tie this.”

Raunak pulled out his phone. Piya’s head began to spin.

“I’ll call an ambulance.”

“No...I...”

“Piya.” Ms. Julie scolded. She made Piya sit down, while Raunak called for the ambulance. The mess was already being cleaned. Piya was losing consciousness, after losing quite a bit of blood.

The ambulance arrived and took her to the hospital, but she was unconscious for the ride there and after. Ms. Julie and Divya offered to stay with her, and asked everyone else to remain at the school.

“How did she get such a deep injury? She was fine just a few minutes ago. Who—?” Divya asked, scrolling through Piya’s contacts. She saw Abhay’s number and gave him a call.

Ms. Julie watched from outside, as doctors scrambled to give her blood and control the bleeding.

“Have you called someone?”

“Yes, he’s on his way.”

The doctors cleaned her arm, applied the medication, and began putting stitches. The panic gradually subsided, brining relief to her co-workers. Abhay arrived as soon as he could. Divya was pacing back and forth frantically, and bumped into him, falling flat onto the ground.

“I’m….very sorry.” She winced. Abhay held out his hand.

“It’s alright. Are you okay?”

She looked up and sighed in relief.

“Oh you’re here.” Abhay pulled her up. “And thanks.”

He nodded.

“How is Piya?” He couldn’t tear his eyes from the ward.

“She’s okay. Thank goodness we made it quickly.”

“Thank you for bringing her here.”

The nurse came out when Piya had regained consciousness, and let only one person inside to meet her. Both ladies insisted he check on her first.

She hated waking up in a hospital room. The tubes, the burning smell of ammonia and other medications, it all brought back horrible memories. Piya couldn’t focus her vision without feeling tired. Tight bandages over stitches. Her heart rate increased over the confinement, until his hand fared over her hair.

“Thank goodness....you’re okay.” He whispered, laying a kiss on her forehead. Piya blinked twice, taking his hand at the side. Her angel, her Abhay was here.

“I’ll let your co-workers see you. They’re worried sick.”

Piya nodded, and continued to only nod as Divya and Ms. Julie came in to check on her. Abhay waited outside, until they took their leave. The nurse spoke with him in the meantime. They needed to keep Piya here for a few more hours under observation.

She took his hand when he returned, and placed it over her stomach.

“You’ll have to stay here for a few hours. Just to make sure. Alright?”

“Okay.” She said, voice shaking, tears brimming. Abhay kissed her cheek, and wiped her tears. Her grip was tense.

“How did this happen?”

“I…don’t know. Some girl…came to the front desk and left...then my arm was bleeding.”

Abhay dragged a finger over the bandages to numb any lingering pain. He would heal it completely after he took her home anyways, so he wasn’t as worried anymore. Piya kept gazing into his eyes and relaxed.

“Could it have been Maithili.....?” She asked.

The talisman couldn’t hold her back anymore, rendering it useless. He also didn’t answer her question.

“Abhay…..”

He wiped more tears and continued to stroke her hair. He let his eyes turn cobalt when out of sight of any other humans, knowing the color always soothed her nerves. Her grip on his hands softened.

“It’s okay. Just breathe.”

The hours ticked by at a snail’s pace. But Abhay stayed at her side for all of it. After the doctor conducted one more checkup, Abhay requested to take her home.

“Remember to change the dressing every few hours.”

“Thank you, doctor.”

Abhay took her straight home. It was his turn to stay the night. He helped her lie down in bed, and placed a pillow underneath her arm.

“Let me take a look.”

She let Abhay undo the gauze, and looked away herself. He examined the wound for a moment, and covered sections of it with his palm. He thought it would all to heal it, but nothing changed. In fact, her skin began to become necrotic. Piya recoiled and looked back.

“Abhay!” She shrieked.

“This is.....”

He was sure this was Maithili’s doing now. One of her little tricks to hurt Piya. He had seen this before, in the past war, where a simple scratch from a Vitael’s nails could destroy flesh at a rapid pace. They loved their venomous concoctions. But he had a counter. His Duralis blood. It had saved many in the past, so it could certainly save her. Without thinking of the other consequences, he sliced his palm open with a nail and pressed the bleeding cut to her wound. His blood seeped in, red and black mixing together. The veins in her arm colored dark for a split second, then returned to normal. It stung a little, but after which brought relief. And with it, the wound was healing, and their bond was tied.

At least it’s not a full moon.

Piya’s head felt heavy, with the rush of sensory overload his blood was creating. He coaxed her head back down on the pillow, and brushed her hair away from her eyes. She looked at him.

“Abhay, your blood.....”

He sighed, then laughed a little.

“I hesitated so much and had to do it anyways. How does it feel?”

Traces of vampiric blood in the body of a human always amplified their physical senses and healing capabilities. Not only that, their full blood bond had been forged. Piya looked at him. She could hear his thoughts, feel his turbulent emotions. Just like he could do with her.

“I can do all that?”

She could already hear his thoughts. He nodded, touching her hair.

“But only with me, jaan. And you won’t be as fast.”

Abhay checked her arm once more. No trace of the gash left. He worried it would scar. He stood up and discarded the blood soaked dressing into the trash.

He looked out her bedroom window, where the colors of a bright yellow dress fleeted into the trees. Floral print.

Chapter 73

Return To Me, My Love

“He loves me….”

Maithili often used the petals of flowers for this little game, the prettiest of flowers she could find in the palace gardens. As a young girl, wondering about Abhayendra’s feelings towards her occupied much of her wandering thoughts.

Flowers could grow back. Not fireflies. Not as fast, at least. One such firefly flickered out, body crushed inside her fist. Each one she caught with her hand met its immediate demise, and continued her game.

She wiped her hand against the grass.

“He loves me not…”

Upset and forgotten. He forgot her, for Piya. A girl he didn’t even know for that long. Maithili, she grew up with him. She had originally hoped Piya would die from blood loss before anyone managed to help her. It was so easy to find her and cause the necessary damage.

How much luck has the universe given you?

Piya. He saved her. Took care of her. Loved her. Maithili wanted him to do all of that for her, and only her. The fire of her jealousy burned through the lives of the innocent fireflies.

Abhay rushed and followed the trail of the dressed woman, knowing well that it was Maithili. Only she would dare to cause fatal harm to Piya. He put Piya into a deep sleep at home to recuperate, while he went after her. It was time for him to see for himself.

After so many years, he’d meet Maithili again. Face to face.

No, he wasn’t sneaking off to meet her like they always did. He wasn’t there to speak with love. He never loved this Maithili. The one he loved died long back, though she was alive physically. She took too much from him.

I’ll never forgive you.

Maithili didn’t know why she decided to come here. This place lost its specialty. Piya’s presence ruined it all, and if she couldn’t have it, neither could they. She saw fire. Burning and burning until no life could thrive. If she wanted, that fire could burn all of this to the ground.

Abhay passed through the barrier and looked around. Past his nose, a lingering scent of lilac, just as he remembered. It used to smell soothing, now it only burned. Only a month ago, he came here with Piya to celebrate her life. Tonight, the gazebo was plain and nondescript. The fireflies weren’t dancing. He was here to confront his past. Nothing more, nothing less.

Maithili was there, seated in a patch of grass with her knees tucked against her chest. She turned around. Same face, same presence. Turbulent black eyes, runes down her cheeks. The only difference, she was dressed for the times. An innocent human had to die for just a dress.

Not that she cared.

Maithili smiled, behind which hid her contempt. Abhay stood frozen, but kept his hands balled into fists. He still couldn’t believe his eyes.

“You’re here, Abhayendra. You came for me.”

She stood up, and walked over to him on her toes, arms swinging behind her back. Like a young girl walking merrily though a meadow to meet her lover. Her hands reached up to touch him, to meet those beautiful eyes of his again, but he threw them aside.

“Don’t touch me.”

She felt small pricks at the skin, like someone was poking her arms and leg with the sharp tip of a night. She laughed. He had done this before.

“Why? Haven’t you missed me?”

He snarled, and shoved her back against a tree. The branches rattled and leaves fell upon their heads. Birds took off from the heights. Maithili scowled and let herself go into rage. No more smiles. Not only was her face marked with runes, but her arms and legs were too.

“What is it about her that I don’t have?!”

Her voice boomed through the forest.

Lots of things, Abhay thought.

“How dare you hurt her!” He roared back, eyes gleaming red as bright as her markings. Shadows escaped from his skin, circling his body like a mighty torrent. Some constricted her. The places she felt pain began to tear open and bleed. Fangs snapped together. If he had one thing in common with the beast, it was his hatred for Maithili.

Of course. Only a soul like yours could create a Duralis vampire.

She looked up, and breathed out heavily.

“How dare I? You left me no choice, Abhayendra. How could you bring her here, to *our* special place? This….fantasy. It was only ours. Remember?”

Meet me where the light meets the dark.

“We don’t share anything special. If we did, perhaps my family would’ve loved their full lives. Perhaps, Siddharth and Mandu would have lived happily as humans. Perhaps, things could’ve been different.”

“Abhayendra—“

“I found happiness after a long time. Before you lay your bloodstained fingers over me and my loved ones again, I’ll end you right here.”

He showed no hesitation. His grip crushed her throat, so tight that it forced her to gasp for breath. She gripped his wrist and forearm, and cast a explosive shockwave through it that loosened his hold. His hand was bleeding. Broken at the wrist. She was strong, stronger than he remembered.

The shadows of his expanded, and extinguished the remaining light of the fireflies.

“Painful, isn’t it? Imagine, just how much you’ve hurt me.”

Abhay stared at his wrist and laughed. She was still delusional.

“You don’t even know the definition of pain.”

He snapped his wrist back in place, and openly mocked her. He wanted to see her angry. Guilty, as she should have felt 300 years ago.

“Avoiding Ayushmaan? Why? He’s looking for you, you know? I’m sure you enjoyed his company and trust more than you ever did mine.”

“Abhayendra!”

Her finger shot up in his face.

“Abhayendra is dead!” He roared, slapping her hand down. “Abhayendra Rao died in the middle of the forest some 300 years ago, at the hands of his once beloved wife. I am not your Abhayendra.”

I’m only Piya’s Abhay.

Anger didn’t suit her. Somewhere, his heart hurt, seeing the girl he would once give his life for turned into a demon who only loved power, control, and her own obsessions. Nothing else.

“And I will cause hers too! Right in front of your eyes! And you won’t be able to do anything. You’ll have no choice but to return to me, to your true love.”

She was unhinged, crazed. Centuries of solitary confinement would drive the most sane of minds mad. She wasn’t sane to begin with.

Abhay glared, and firmly said.

“As long as I’m with her, you can’t do anything.”

He wasn’t prepared to fight her alone. And he knew she wouldn’t hurt him. Yet. He turned his back on her, fading into the night like a shadow.

Maithili stood tall in the center of the meadow, disheveled. A ball of fire collected in the middle of her palms. Each remaining firefly, burst into flames and then ash, falling upon her eyes in a spectacular show of death and destruction.

“If I can’t have you, no one can.” She hissed, disappearing into the night.

——————————————————————

Tonight she felt an emotion called lust for the first time, making an intense blend of passion and deep affection. The way his irises gleamed as he stared at her, head to toe, it was akin to a wildfire spreading throughout her body. He pressed his fingers into her thighs, pulling her close to his body. The kitchen counter put her at perfect height.

The blood bond changed things dramatically, in just a few days. It brought them closer, physically and emotionally. Able to feel one another more closely. Abhay couldn’t bear the thought of being far from her at all. Return to his true love he did, to his Piya. He only wanted her. He wished to devout his every thought in her name, and forget everyone else. He played with her hair, teasing her skin with soft kisses, reminding his heart of her fragrance. Just a few hours apart, and they couldn’t help but miss each other.

Piya had been pretending to recuperate at home for the weekend, unable to explain away how such a deep and serious wound could disappear in under a day. She wasn’t bored, with music always at her side, but even she couldn’t play the violin for more than a few tens of minutes. Her arm was still sore from the physical trauma, one thing vampire blood couldn’t heal. Abhay arrived to give her company, with a stack of his favorite books in his arms. Originally planning to read together, those books were now lying unattended somewhere in the living room. They found another pastime.

He trailed his finger over her sore arm, and nuzzled her cheek.

“Isn’t this sensation tortuous at times? If you want, we can fix that right away.”

Her body temperature rose, thighs pressed into his hips. He waited for her answer. Just the mere thought bothered her well. The wetness was hard to ignore. She sucked a breath in, cursing his sweet torture.

“You—”

“I?”

Even in a single word, the seductive flavor to his voice was present. Deep and needy. He didn’t even have to try.

“Good night.”

She jumped off and pressed her palms to her cheeks. But she wanted it just as bad. Embarrassed, she ran into the bedroom and closed the door.

“Stupid emotions.”

The lights began to dim. She at first thought they were broken, but the growing presence of a slithering shadow underneath told otherwise. His form was enough to darken the room, and encircled her whole body. In a split second, he reconstituted before her, allowing the lights to return to their brightness. Piya jumped in surprise, breathing heavily and heart racing. He aptly decided to leave his shirt unbuttoned. The tips of his fangs were visible through his hungry smile. It didn’t help that he flickered over them with his tongue.

He was hungry, for her.

“You’re not going home, are you?”

“I don’t intend to, no.”

The power of his charm could allude her no more. He kissed her, calming the rising heat with a taste of his cool lips. She blushed even harder and brought this moment into bed, crumpling the bedsheets in her palms, then snaking her hands up his chest and down his back.

“You’re very warm, Piya.” He whispered in her ear, biting the top with his fangs. The

cuts stung. And the heat kept rising.

The smallest drop of blood touched his tongue. She always tasted good.

“Why is that?”

“Don’t...don’t pretend like you don’t know why.” She stammered, holding him closer.

His fingers reached under her nightie drawing circles on the small of her back. Piya’s body was on fire, seeking his icy touches to calm it down. Her lips quivered. It wouldn’t stop growing. Every last thought of her mind, consumed itself with him. Craved him.

“Are you...doing that thing with your emotions again?”

“Perhaps. Do you feel it?” Her breath hitched as he traced her curves with his finger. “Surely you must know, that we are more prone to such desires.”

“I know...”

She read something about that. Lust was a powerful motivator for them, towards blood and carnal pleasures. Abhay was already subjecting her virgin skin to sweet torment.

“Breathe, jaan.”

She exhaled and looked into his eyes, gradually flooding with cobalt. He softly smiled, baring his sharp canines, and rubbed her back, undoing hooks one by one.

Abhay pinned his arms by either side, dominating by body and enchanting with eyes. She couldn’t help herself and pulled him closer by the hems of his shirt. He groaned and nudged her chin up, trapping her in an ever-deepening kiss. Her body shuddered with pleasure. It all hurt so good.

“More?”

“More.” She breathed, peeling his shirt off his shoulders. She wanted to feel this intimacy. She wanted that release. Abhay marked her skin with his kisses. It was her first time, and he wanted to make it memorable.

“Abhay....” She moaned. He let all control escape his grasp, bombarding her with the manifestations of his lust. Amplifying her own rapidly.

Past his name, she didn’t have the focus to finish her sentence,

“Yes, Piya? Tell me.....”

He towered over her and threw his shirt to the side, tearing through her nightie. The beast was freed. He wanted her. Every inch of her body, he wanted his mark upon it.

“Tell me.....what do you want?” He asked.

“You...” she whispered back, entranced by his eyes.

Please be gentle, she thought. He leaned down and whispered.

“I will. You’re in my care tonight, jaan.”

The cobalt turned deep red, fangs fully extended and teasing the skin at her neck. His skin grew slightly paler. His teeth nicked the skin, making it bleed. Her nails dug into his lower back.

“I want you so damn much....” He whispered, voice raspy. The smell of her blood pronounced. He licked her small wound and inhaled. “Dammit Piya. Why do you smell so good?”

She smiled, taking handfuls of his raven locks.

“Now you’re trapped.” She whispered, giggling into his ear. “Drink as much as you want.”

Bloodlust arrived. He didn’t hesitate. He liked this trap. His bite cut deep into her throat, her nightie and his clothes laying on the floor somewhere. Every last barrier between them was gone. She wrapped her legs around him and let him drink, addicted to the pleasure he and his bites gave her.

And just as she reached the heights of pleasure, he claimed her. Marking his love inside her. It felt so good. They met eyes. Piya didn’t find the scarlet red as chilling as she used to. She cupped his cheeks. The red of the fire. The flames that scorched between them. He licked her wounds and his lips of blood, wiping his chin with a graze of the palm. He licked it off in front of her, eyes blazing with thirst and want. Piya gasped for air as he trailed kisses up and down her chest to jaw.

“You are mine.” He asserted, nuzzling her jaw with the tip of his nose. His grip tightened, nails tearing at the sheets. “Only mine.”

“I only want to be yours....” she whispered.

He brushed the locks of hair that covered her face. She looked drowsy, now that they slowed down. He pressed his palm over her heart to calm it, color in his eyes fading. Both their bodies were riddled with scratches and marks of love, Piya’s more pronounced than his.

She fell asleep, holding onto Abhay’s hand. He kissed her cheeks and took her into his embrace, deciding to stay with her for the rest of the night. She curled up closer, as he drew the blankets over them.

He watched over her for the entire night. He didn’t want to lose this. Lose her. This beautiful firefly had darkness as her protector.

“I love you, Piya….” He whispered into her ear. “I’ll always be with you.” She stirred in her sleep, closer to him.

The night was too short to his liking. He wanted to stay longer. Piya awoke feeling a good kind of sore. Last night was just like a dream. She regretted none of it. Abhay turned his head and pulled her close.

“You stayed?” She rubbed her sleepy eyes, laying a palm over his chest. It lit up, dimly, in their colors. She smiled, and laid her head against him.

“I told you I would.”

She buried herself in his embrace. It was warm there again, better than the chill in the room. He kissed her forehead and looked into her eyes.

“Did you like it?”

She blushed and nodded.

“Again?”

“Let me recover first, Mr. Vampire. Even with our blood bond, I can’t match your stamina.”

She was only a little quicker on her feet, and her wounds and pains healed faster. Not a significant difference, besides their connection. He smirked and touched their noses together.

“I know.” He fared his hand down her torso. “I didn’t hurt you anywhere, did I?”

She shook her head.

“What kind of a question is that? You could never hurt me.”

“You have too much faith in me sometimes.”

“It’s in good reason.” She kissed his cheek. “Okay?”

He nodded. Wrapped snug in his arms, she disappeared from sight for a little. Abhay trailed his lips everywhere, kissing her gently.

Piya’s phone rang moments later and ruined their moment. Abhay glared at the device, as she reached to answer it. She read the caller ID.

“Why is Siddharth——“

Piya peeked at Abhay and giggled. She answered.

“Good morning, Siddharth.”

“Good morning, Piya. Sorry to bother, but is Abhay with you? He’s blocking me out of his thoughts.”

Piya bit her lower lip and looked at Abhay.

“Yes, he’s with me.”

Siddharth cleared his throat, as the realization dawned that Abhay didn’t want to be disturbed. Piya’s voice was very telling.

“In hindsight, I shouldn’t have asked….”

“Sorry?”

Abhay asked for the phone. She nodded and gave it to him.

“Can you—-“

“I’m pretty sure I’ve never interrupted you and Mandu before.”

“Oh, so this is what is happening. Not that I thought otherwise.”

Siddharth snickered on the other end. Piya took the phone back, and Abhay took his revenge for the interruption by showering Piya with kisses as she tried to speak.

“Is he bothering you too much, Piya? Say the word and I’ll drag him home.”

“No no, nothing like that. Your brother is just naughtier than he looks.”

Abhay bit her collarbone, causing her to yelp. Siddharth busted up laughing.

“Just make sure he doesn’t eat you. I’ll hang up now, otherwise he’ll surely do something to me.”

“He won’t. He’s also very sweet.” She pinched his cheek.

“Can’t argue with that.”

Piya hung up and set the phone down. Abhay caressed her hair and pinned his body against hers. Piya inhaled. He smelled lovely.

“Naughty? And me?”

“Yes. Naughty vampy. What if Siddharth needed something?”

“I’ll take care of it later. He can afford to wait just an hour more.”

She tapped his nose and brushed her hair back with her fingers, sitting up and staring at her bare skin through the mirror. Not only was it marked with his scratches, her neck was riddled with smaller bite marks and hair was disheveled from such a night. Her first night, ever, with the man she loved more than anything else. One in heart, body, and soul. Abhay sat up behind her, staring at her through the mirror.

You’re so beautiful.

She heard this, and blushed. He trailed kisses up her shoulder, holding hands across her belly.

“What happened?” He asked.

She shook her head and touched the love bites on her neck. Not that she didn’t like them, but she didn’t want to hide them.

“Want me to heal them?” He solemnly asked.

“Not really. But then I won’t be able to hide them during rehearsal and classes when I go back.”

It was a little embarrassing if anyone happened to see. He decided that he should, for her ease of mind.

“Don’t worry. I’ll give you more later.”

Piya blushed.

“Shameless.”

He chuckled and turned her around, placing his palm over the skin. His eyes flashed cobalt, and the bites were gone.

“There.”

“Thank you.”

They got dressed, and Abhay watched as Piya had her breakfast. He chuckled, as she shoved a large spoonful of cereal into her mouth. He brushed his knuckles against her puffed cheek.

“You’re very cute.”

Piya quickly swallowed and glared at him.

“Stop making me blush when I’m eating….”

She noticed some scratches on his neck, then at her nails. Her cheeks turned pink, and she lowered her head.

Did I do that?

“What happened?” He asked.

“Your neck.....”

He touched it and smirked.

“Ah. Your lovely gift.”

Gift? Oh god.

Her thoughts were a treat to listen to. That was all he wanted, to be with her. Fall more and more in love with Piya. And push away more and more any danger of Maithili.

To protect this firefly of his, he’d do anything. Even rendezvous with death for another time.
