Here's what I recall from their explanation:
- a viewer in India has to tune into the show ideally 5 minutes before air time and watch it until it ends
- viewer cannot change the channel during ads because that's how the channel's revenue and time slot allocation is determined

Basically, TRP calculations are derived via a sample data set, which is not even remotely accurate to actual viewing patterns in each household. This method of sampling made sense back when shows like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi used to air because every single television in an Indian household used to tune in to those K-Ekta shows. I believe she once mentioned in an interview with Anupama Chopra that her TRPs used be in the 24-27 range, numbers that we don't even hear of anymore because technology and content creation have come a long way since then. Point being - the method is outdated and inaccurate, but unfortunately it's the only litmus test that currently exists.
@bold: I doubt that's the case, he probably didn't want to open that can of worms, especially during a live session. He's a seasoned producer, he must know how his work is being graded by the channel.
