What about reality shows, are you open to doing them?
I am an actor and I don’t want to portray myself in front of the camera. I can do that in interviews where I can be candid. I always say I want people to recognise and love me for the body of work that I have as an actor. I don’t want them to follow me because they see me eating breakfast in the morning in my pyjamas or fighting with someone on camera. I want them to follow me as an actor and that’s my personal choice. It is not a judgement on any format of entertainment. It is not meant for me. I am purely an actor and a filmmaker. I am a born liar, I have to go in front of the camera and lie everyday by playing a character. Something like Khatron Ke Khiladi I can do because I love adventure. But I won’t leave a film to do a show like KKK.
How was your working experience on Panipat?
The film added value to my life with a very good human being and that was Mr Ashutosh Govarikar. Ashu sir became a part of my life and he is a very important person in this industry for me. I have this confidence that tomorrow if I need any help in terms of tips, advice, he will immediately meet me. Rest I can’t talk about the film much because it was not my film.
You are a married man, have you ever been told that to be successful you shouldn’t get married?
This is a point that needs to be highlighted that I was supremely alarmed. Even today I see boys working on projects, I would not take names, they hide their age. It’s crazy and I was always amazed. But I realised that our mentality is such, it is narrow minded. There is a film Taken where a father rescues his daughter. The daughter in the film is 16 years old but do you know her age when she was cast to play the role, she was 35. She played the role of a 16 year old and they made her look like that. In India even if I go under transformation where I cut my hair, lose weight and look like a 21 year old, I go to meet the makers, get finalised for the film but when I am about to sign the movie and they get to know my age that I am 35, they would not cast me. So this is the reason the boys today are hiding their age. You have an example of Aamir Khan sir who at the age of 40 plays the role of an Engineering student. Age is just a number. I feel a married actor is more attractive for fans. It gives you more credibility as a human being.
How frustrating was the phase when you were not getting work?
It was very frustrating. I was in a state of depression for two and half years. From 26 to 28 and a half. I had done a film with Ashok Mehta which he was supposed to sell but he passed away. I couldn’t sell the film because I knew nobody in the industry. I suffered financial losses. After that there was a dull period where I had no work for 2 years. There was nothing happening and nobody was accepting me. I shut myself in my bedroom for six months at a stretch. It was that bad. But one fine day you just wake up and say that this is not you. This is not how you are going to lead your life for the next 20 years. You go out and do whatever you want. So that’s when I called up people who were waiting for me to work with them as an actor. I called them and decided to work with them. I made up my mind that till the time I don’t find work which I want to do, I will do whatever I get.
Did you face ups and downs while trying to get a job in the industry because of your father’s legacy or you had to go through your share of struggles?
Then there was also a phase when few people actually created a perception about me that I am not an actor but a hero material, the Bollywood one who can’t act. It took me 4 years to break that myth about me. Then I started working with people who belonged to the clout where they make subjects which have a lot of meat.
Who noticed you first or who told you that you can be an actor?
I was told by many people that I should be a hero but cinematographer Ashok Mehta was the one who advised me first but initially I did not listen to him. We together produced a Marathi film which was directed by me and he was the DOP. When I first met him he told me why are you wasting time on camera, direction, you have a good face, height, you should be a hero. He would send me to different auditions. There were also many people who were waiting to work with him for a long time. I was not taking these things seriously. But when I was 28-29 I went through a very bad financial crisis. I was facing a lot of financial crisis and I wanted to make movies but I was not getting any outlet. During that time there were 5/6 Marathi filmmakers who were waiting to work with me. I was frustrated with the financial crisis and I needed money desperately so I called them and asked if they would like to work with me. Then I did 2/3 Marathi films back to back and one of them turned out to be a huge hit for which I received the Filmfare best actor award. So it started from there. For this I will give credit to my father because people within the industry knew that I was there and I was very active in theatre. So there were people who especially waited to work with me and wrote characters for me because at that time Marathi cinema did not have someone who was a hero type. There was no concept of a hero in Marathi cinema that time. I came in with the entire concept where I could dance, do action and romance.
What is your wife's reaction when she sees you romancing others onscreen? Does she get insecure?
Yaa Yaa she has no other option. She knows this industry pretty well and we have this understanding and she knows me as a person. So there is a certain kind of trust and comfort that we share. Agar insecure hoti bhi hongi she doesn’t show. She must be feeling that but she has her ways of dealing with it and in a very mature way and I give complete credit to her. A lot of love for her for that
