Chapter 70
Blood Moon (b)
“Didi, will you still be my didi in our next life?”
“Always, in every life after this. I promise.”
One sister was already reborn from the brink of death. The other was likely to be reborn as well. What would she look like? The same, or disguised as someone else? Mandu tapped her fingers against the trunk of a tree, staring out in thought. It was possible Maithili would join her in her own new life soon, though she had no desire to keep the facade of a hollow promise.
It wasn’t her sister who would be coming back.
Any moment now, and the blood moon’s final rite would commence. The attacks would begin. She would experience the beginnings of a war from a supernatural perspective. The palace was far away, and she stood in the farthest circle out from it in their formation. Dagger clasped in one fist, she waited.
Even if you return, I won’t let you win.
It took her a decade after turning to get over the tragedy, a period of time she didn’t remember quite well, and a period that neither Siddharth nor Abhay wished to speak about. She didn’t have a particular want to know herself.
A hand clasped her shoulder, startling her out of thought. She turned with incredible swiftness, pinning her visitor to the tree with her arm and blade at their throat.
“Must you startle me at this time?” She huffed, settling her nerves and letting go.
Siddharth came to check on her, and nearly got a silver blade to the neck instead. She pulled the dagger down at her side. It wouldn’t be the first time she almost accidentally stabbed the poor man.
Siddharth ran his fingers through her hair, and laughed.
“Are you okay? There is still some time.”
She shook her head at him and pressed herself into his arms, hiding for a moment as the violet in her eyes faded. Siddharth sighed, and kissed her forehead. Taking her hands, he looked into her eyes.
“My queen has defeated many challengers back in her day. She is capable, and strong.”
“Was....”
She looked down. He disagreed.
“Still is.”
The howls of wolves signaled their near arrival. Her fist twisted and tightened over the hilt of the dagger. The silver blade dazzled under the night sky. She always tried to fight with it, as to not forget the tutelage her parents gave her. Those teachings were precious memories.
Siddharth cracked his knuckles, and stood next to her.
“It’s been a while, since we fought at each other’s side in a true battle, hasn’t it? I look forward to this.”
“Siddharth.....”
“Hmm?”
She didn’t know what to say, and shook her head, looking behind her. To think that home, where she grew up, had become such a pain to be around.
“If she starts bothering us again—“
The talisman dangled from her neck, keeping Maithili’s taunting voices at bay till now. It wasn’t strong enough to keep an entire spirit of her caliber away.
“We’re on a level playing field now. Things are different. Much different.”
In good and in bad.
“Shall we, my love?”
Vampires weren’t normally thirsty for the blood of a werewolf. It didn’t taste that good, and only benefited them on the matter of an injury inflicted by their claws. Tonight was different. Many craved to make the wolves their dinner, as revenge for invading their territory and killing their own. And not a single werewolf dared to return within Dehradun’s borders until this day. What little territory they had, it was now claimed by the vampires. Trespassing was the only way in, and they seemed to be doing fine without their alpha.
The air filled with the unpleasant scents of the other species, as the moon took on its red shade. Witches and warlocks alike stood on guard, ready to wage war against their werewolf equivalents. A moving wall of faces with red runes approached the palace grounds, with their master Ayushmaan leading.
“They’re everywhere. Even the progenitors are here.” He complained, originally wanting this to be as less work as possible.
All six siblings of the First Family were present, spread out in a ring around the palace. A rare sight just to see all of them in each other’s presence, and to see many other powerful supernatural gathered in a place that wasn’t The Circle’s headquarters. Ayushmaan ordered a certain sect of wolves to make their ambushes first, their scents still cloaked as human. The poisoned blood shook in glass vials around their necks like collars.
“Let’s see how you resist this...”
Paws beat themselves against the soil in fast dashes, the howls of the pack alerting the other side. Abhay, no longer the only Duralis in the group, joined in creating a shadowy barrier around Maithili’s resting place. Everyone was separated, even his family, making it more urgent for him to help end this as soon as possible.
You’ll never free her.
Bolts of light dashed in and out of the trees, and sounds of injury and natural destruction filled the air. Ayushmaan sent a special group of wolves to find Mandu, not wanting to see her perish from the poison. But with Siddharth, he would be most happy to see that happen to him.
But knowing them, they are probably together. Oh well, I’ll get him next time.
He touched the scar, and followed their trail. His target wasn’t far from him, just as he expected. He knew she hated the palace. Mandu slammed one wolf to the group, slashing the dagger through its flesh and pausing to take a quick drink from it. She looked up, feeling a familiar chill up her spine.
He stepped into view, hands behind his back.
“It brings me such joy to see you again, Your Highness.”
He frowned, seeing her lips covered with blood. Those fangs, he didn’t like them either. More wolves surrounded them again, snapping their muzzles at the couple. Siddharth turned around and hissed, then stepped in front of her.
“Such savagery, it doesn’t suit you.”
He looked at Siddharth. This scene was familiar.
“Just like old times, isn’t it?,” he taunted. “Just moments from this situation, you both lost your lives.”
Siddharth didn’t reply, and stared at the scar on his face. He was ready to give him another one. Matching, on the other eye, or maybe even further down his body.
“Haven’t you heard, Siddharth? Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”
“Oh, this will end much differently than last time.”
Mandu glared, but kept her silence. Speaking to him would only dirty her own mouth. Blood was nothing in comparison.
“Well, I guess it is a little different. I don’t have to take care of a child this time.”
She snapped. She pushed Siddharth away and lunged for his throat, pulling him back by the cloak and slicing through his jugular with first her fangs and then her dagger. He pushed her back with a magical force from the palm, and touched the wound. Mangled skin and lots of blood. But she gave it to him, so it lessened the pain: He laughed. The wolves stayed back on his orders. He wanted to see how far this went.
“You got me this time, Mandakini. What a stellar improvement.”
Siddharth engaged next, after helping her up. If he were human, he wouldn’t stand a chance. He already lived through that experience.
“Wow...how fascinating,” he breathed, as Siddharth pinned him to a tree. “You both are quite strong now. Proper rivals, I should say.”
“Quit your flattery.” Siddharth hissed, cutting off his windpipe with a forearm. Ayushmaan gasped momentarily for air then flashed a winked smile. His body began to dissipate, and soon he vanished into thin air, calling two other Vitael in his place. The wolves began to charge, and neither could chase him, in fear of leaving the other alone to fight the rest. Even if they were stronger, the caution was necessary.
Let’s finish them off, my love. We’ll see to him after.
——————————————————————
The palace was much more infested than the outside. Blood of differing colors blended into muddy shades on the ground. It was an easier fight for them, but still exhausting. Abhay couldn’t even recall when he started to kill. Mindlessly, he fought everything in his line of sight.
A wolf lunged for his throat behind him, but couldn’t match his speed. Abhay caught them mid-jump, slamming them into the ground with the force of his palm. Fangs out, and shadows forming sharper nails, he tore into the wolf’s chest and pulled out a beating heart. Fur matted red. He licked his hand, but smelled something better than what he tasted.
Pieces of shattered glass lay under its neck, and liquid seeped out. The beast was riled, and his fingers touched the growing pool.
Smells....so good.
A smell better than a werewolf’s blood. A smell better than Piya’s blood. He didn’t believe the latter to be possible.
His fingers hovered around his mouth, tempting his senses to forget everything else. Abhay breathed heavily, gritting his teeth.
Something is wrong.
He tore his arm away from his lips and wiped his hand against the stone wall. Then, cutting into his thumb, he let a drop of his blood fall and mix in with the leftovers on the floor. It sizzled and ignited. To think he almost consumed some of it.
It’s poison.
He kicked the dead wolf aside and warned any nearby superiors. But the sight outside grew dire. Several vampires were succumbing to the poison already which sapped the life in their bodies and turned them into drying sticks. Easier to kill.
The smell of blood burned their noses. Even the most composed couldn’t resist. Abhay managed to fight the temptation, but others were quick to falter. They ran like madmen towards the source, bloodthirsty, greedy. There was more than one of this glass vials.
“No! It’s a trap!” He yelled, arm extended.
The wiccan standing around were immediately concerned, and with Abhay’s signal and worry, they set up a barrier to keep them in. He then infused it with his own power. Binds of shadows held the hands and feet of those who fought the worst, but had yet to drink. The weak were shifted elsewhere.
His own nose still twitched, and throat still burned. Even if he consumed it and let himself weaken, death was far from him. The rest were the vulnerable.
It does smell good.....too good....
After deep concentration, he cleared his mind of the smell and focused on the advancing Vitael. They came prepared, with power to melt their barriers and pass through with ease.
He took a step forward to fight, but was pulled back.
“Long time no see, Abhayendra.”
Abhay punched at his face, and missed by an inch. Ayushmaan jumped back and held out his palm, throwing him back into the air. Abhay snarled, and pressed his heel against the tree trunk, launching himself forwards.
“You’re finished.” He said.
Ayushmaan laughed.
“I was about to believe the same. You all came prepared. But I think we’re doing quite well. Don’t you agree?”
Then he vanished again.
The Vitael circling the palace were certain to meet their doom just by walking anywhere near the stronger supernatural. But in the chaos that ensued from the poison, even the First Family had no choice but to leave their posts in order to help the others. No one was left to guard the seal.
No.
Abhay began to run, as fast as his feet could take him. Ayushmaan already stood inside the room, and commanded a giant barrier to cover the entire building, a dome like structure. Abhay hit it, and was sent flying back. Danish caught him, and the two nodded and rushed for the palace. He saw Iolanda nearby, also rushing back. Everyone who could was trying to reach the inner chamber, far few than they would like.
——————————————————————
“My queen, the time has come to free you.”
The swirling dome covered the entire palace, and the seal began to flicker and crumble with the powers of all Vitael present. Ayushmaan cackled and raised his arms into the sky, chanting a spell along with his kind, to graciously welcome their queen.
It was too late for the other side.
The rest could only watch in horror, blocked by the barrier. It was too strong, and the strength of the blood moon only encouraged it. Each Duralis tried to dissolve it by means of their shadows, but it took considerable strength. But some had succumbed to the poison, significantly weakened.
No....She has to stay.....
Abhay watched the lights of the seal break and scatter, and billows of energy emerge. Winds howled and sped up, like a storm was brewing. It looked it was forming into her shape, only for a second. But something felt off. The cloud vanished, and left nothing but an empty urn in its wake. That urn tipped over and clattered on the floor. The winds settled.
Everyone went silent. Everyone felt shock.
Ayushmaan stared wide-eyed at the floor. There was nothing. He picked up the urn, and slammed it on the floor. It broke into two.
“Impossible! Where is she?!”
He was angry. Maithili had to be here. They communicated with her. He looked back, and saw a rare snicker out of Dragomir, even as the latter was riddled with confusion. His lip curled into a hateful sneer.
“Retreat. We can’t stay here any longer.”
——————————————————————
Piya couldn’t sleep. She watched the moon carefully, intrigued by its reddish hue. But she felt restless. Her heart was telling her that something was wrong.
Please be okay...., she prayed.
A chime of anklets took over the silence in the hallways outside of the bedroom. She pressed her ears against the door, then backed away. They disappeared shortly thereafter.
Please....don’t come back....
