I had asked my grandpa something similar about freedom struggle since I and a friend were having a argument .

I perhaps have always believed violence against criminals is ok due to my exposure to epics whereas my friend said non violence is the best way.

Your grandpa said the right thing. He was absolutely right. In Mahabharata, it is often highlighted that the silence of good people was more responsible for the war.

Yup. Saam, Daam, Dand, Bhed. Sometimes it's inevitable to use all these methods one after the other. If one doesn't work, the next one is used. But many times, these methods are used by wrong people for wrong reasons. So good people should not shy away from using these too.
