Hola! I have just finished reading Mexican Gothic and with that, I have completed the Readathon. I really have surprised myself 😂😂
So the first book I read for the readathon was The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. And God, I have so many problems with this book that I don't even know how to begin. The most frustrating thing for me was the message that if you have depression, just think it away. Find a new perspective to look at life and it won't be as terrible. Then comes the writing, omg. The book felt barely edited and the writing was just so on the nose. Matt Haig just plainly tells you what to think and it drove me up the walls. The ending was predictable, the characters were just so unlikeable and I couldn't connect with any one of them. The only thing I liked was the concept of the library with those infinite lives. I'm just sad that such a great idea was wasted on this book. My rating will be a 0.5 out of 5.
My second pick was The Great Gatsby. Which was a solid 5 out of 5 read. Fitzgerald's writing is just magical. I will freely admit that I'm a prose snob and this book totally satisfied that need in me. I loved the plot, the setting, the very vibe of the book. The characters were beautifully written, their virtues and flaws so well sketched out. They felt real, even though they were so far removed from my reality. I loved the ending so damn much.
My third book was Speak. I loved this book too. I really loved the writing style and how the author revealed the mystery of what had happened to the main character. I connected so much with the MC, especially when she was dealing with Heather. God, I think we all have these type of 'friends' at one point in our lives. I absolutely loved her interactions with David. And the ending was just chef kiss. When she says no, that moment gave me goosebumps. I'd give it a 4 out of 5.
Mexican Gothic was my last book. I agree with Anam. The pacing in the beginning was quite slow. I really would have loved with the author had just started with Neomà arriving at High Place and use the pages she'd save to develop Francis and her connection more. The best thing about the book was the setting I think. The descriptions of the place just made the book and High Place come alive. The horror elements were brilliant. Though it wasn't truly frightening but it was gross and shudder-inducing and I loved that. Also Neomà was brilliant. I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5.
That's the 7th chapter or so, I think, right? If so, you're already towards the end. I'm sure you can finish it in a few days!
Yes it is. I think I have about one or two chapters left now.
I just reached chapter 7.
Besides the language, not understanding most of the references is also a problem with reading classics. Sparknotes is helping me with this one😆

I really wanted to. I had planned on reading Finlay Donovan and The Great Gatsby, but opted for reading a shorter book than Finlay Donovan and an easier book than The Great Gatsby and therefore settled on The Midnight Library.
I will most probably read Finlay Donovan is Killing It this month.
Finally finished The Great Gatsby. 😛
Congrats😆
How did you find it?
I thought that the story was good, overall. There were parts that I was honestly impressed with, and others that I found myself dragging through with difficulty, but it was mostly the writing, not the story itself. What I didn't like was that it took way too long to set it up.
It was a good enough book, but I won't call it the best fiction, as some sites and people do.
Congrats😆

Take help from sparksnote. It really helped me. Both with the language and the cultural references that would've gone completely over my head otherwise.
I haven't started any new book this month. Not really in the mood to read anything. I will probably pick it up in a couple of days if I feel like reading again. What about you?
