Oh definitely. American people have a bad rep, but not all are mean and obnoxious. It's a very gross overstatement. Some are very warm and friendly. I was in Georgia a few years back for a case competition and I went into a restaurant and ordered some food. Now that restaurant was meat only and I'm a vegetarian. When I told the waitress that, she immediately went "Honey you don't want any of these dishes without meat. Let me get you something else instead." She went to the chef and came back with this exquisite Italian-Russian dish (it was like a cross between ravioli and perogies). I was expecting to be ripped off for it as well and it was actually a very reasonable meal. But then that same day I met someone at the competition site and she just brushed me off like the dirt on her shoe.
British people have a very dry sense of humour and talking style. It's why they appear so off putting. But one of my favourite profs was British and he was awesome.
