"Same old boring place, same old boring people, the cribbing customers and monotonous days and nights. This has been our lives from the day we were born. Sometimes I feel like we shouldn't have been born," an angry but more disheartened earring said dangling her feet down.
"Talk for yourself. Don't say 'us'. I'm very much happy to be born." Her carefree twin rolled her eyes.
"Aren't you upset that no one buys us and we're stuck here in this place. It pains me to see others happily go to their new families while we, sorry, I am stuck here. Every time a customer comes, his eyes glow when they watch us and suddenly they decide for something else. Wo Beena bhabhi nahi bolti Mirzapur mein Kaleen Bhaiyya ko, 'Har baar garam karke thanda hi chhod dete hain', kuch waisa hi lagta hai."
"Wo isliye kyunki hum expensive hain. Har kisi ke bas ki baat nahi humein khareed pana. Aur aap to kabhi khush hi nahi hoti. Factory mein pehle khush thi. Sab log taareef kar rahe the. Phir aapki shikayatein shuru ho gayi, jagah boring hai. Log boring hain. Phir jab yahan laaye gaye to kitni khush thi shuru mein. Phir aapka drama phir se shuru ho gaya. Hmph!"
"Mujhse aise baat mat karo. Main badi hu." The angry earring retorted.
"Sirf do seconds, hmph."
"To? Do seconds hi sahi, hu to badi!"
"Aapki problem kya hai?"
The elder twin was silent.
The younger one looked at her sad face, "seriously problem kya hai?"
"Nobody wants us!" Badi said looking down.
Chhoti looked at her in surprise, "Matlab?"
She sighed and replied, "Main khush thi us jagah. Lekin....Jis din suna ki mujhe kisi aur ke ghar jana hai, mera mann uth gaya. Pata chala ki jise main apna ghar maan rahi thi, wo ghar mera tha hi nahi. Isliye mera mann wahan se uth gaya," she sighed and continued, "Jab yahan laya gaya hamein to laga ye hamara ghar hai. Lekin phir pata chala ki ye log bas hamari tareef karte hain logon ke saamne kyunki inke liye hamari financial value hai. Kisi ko hamari padi nahi hai."
Chhoti became thoughtful, "Are. Pendant Sir ko dekho, wo kitne shant hain. Unhein bhi to lagta hoga ki..."
She was cut short, "Ise kya dekhun? Ye hamesha khush rehta hai kyunki tum Jo saath ho." She bit her tongue as soon as she said it.
Chhoti looked at her confused, "Matlab?"
"Matlab... Matlab...Matlab ye ki mujhe isi ke liye to banaya gaya tha. Taki iske saath meri jodi bann sake." Badi smiled, "Ye bhi mujhe bade pyar se dekhta tha," she stared at chhoti, "Jab tak tum nahin bani thi?"
"Matlab do seconds?" Chhoti asked genuinely. But the badi was angry and stared at her.
"Pata hai Badi? Mera ek sapna hai. Main na ek bahut achchi earring banna chahti hu. Main chahti hu ki main aisi earring banun ki jiske bhi kaan mein jaun, use sirf muskurahat du. Na ki dard."
"Main tumhara sapna sach karne mein tumhara saath dunga," The pendant which was silent till now spoke up and a shy smile appeared on Chhoti's face.
"Main hamesha tumhara saath dungi pendant," Badi said and looked at the pendant who was too busy in Chhoti to notice her.
Just then, the door opened and a dashing man entered the store.
The two earrings stopped everything and looked at him while the pendant noticed the attention slipping away from him and coughed which was met by indifference.
"Haaye, Kitna sundar hai na aur kitna lamba?" Chhoti remarked.
He pouted and looked away but felt the earth slipping beneath him and the earrings screamed as they were picked up and placed in the hands of the guy he so badly wanted to ignore while the earrings secretly wished to be taken away.
He looked up from the small of his palm into the big eyes and wondered to himself, "Itna bhi lamba nahi hai. Aur mujhe khareedne ki to iski haisiyat hi nahi hogi."
There was a glint in his eyes as he placed them back in the Vitthal Dada's hands.
"Itna bada shopkeeper hai. Haath theek se saaf kyun nahi karta ye?" The pendant thought rolling his eyes, "Pata nahi Kitne din iske gande, badbudar haath mein baithn..." Before he could finish, they felt themselves covered in dark but they could still hear the muffled laughter of them. The pendant thought, "Vitthal Dada must be thinking 'good riddance'."
Their patience was about to wear out when they could finally see light and they breathed deep in relief.
They looked into a pair of innocent eyes and thought 'lucky us'. The glint in her eyes mirrored the glint in the man's eyes they had seen in the shop.
The girl adored herself in the mirror as she placed the pendant around her neck.
"Could this chain not have been a little longer," the pendant felt frustrated as he struggled to elongate himself to reach down but was limited to the upper part of the middle of her breasts. He could barely touch her there.
"Anyways, something is better than nothing," He thought as he gave up the struggle.
The earrings waited with bated breath for their turn that never came.
She picked them up and their eyes shone with excitement. This was the moment everyone had always told them about. Now they are going to be someone's forever. They are going to be held close to someone as they had been prepared since they were born.
"Chhoti, you were right. We are going to get the fruit of our patience. Finally."
"Hmm," Chhoti simply nodded, too happy to speak.
But they were placed on a wooden space that reminded them of the factory and the shop.
"Do we belong anywhere?" They wondered to themselves as they saw their partner going away from them before they were swallowed by darkness.
"Kaisi jagah fans gaye hain hum," Badi cribbed and made her voice dramatic so that Chhoti could hear her pain in her voice that she could not see in the dark.
"At least he's in a happy place," Chhoti told the Badi, hiding her tears in dark while their partner screamed as he was pulled down from his happy place and placed in another dirty, stinky hand.
