Mastani was a historical character. She was from early 1700 & back then men, especially the aristocrats, were not expected to be monogamous. Mastani was the daughter of King Chhatrasal & her father himself had 2 wives. Even the Maratha emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji had 5 wives (some sources state he had actually 8 wives). So even if we leave out the authenticity of Bhansali's version of Bajirao Mastani, Mastani belonged to an era when polygamy was a common practice & already married men were allowed to acquire more wives if they pleased. Unless you hate Mastani just because she was played by the actress you hate, it doesn't make sense to hate her for "wrecking" home. Because by that logic, most of the historical queens would become homewreckers.
But Maya belonged to the modern times, where people are not only morally but legally expected to be monogamous. Polygamy was banned way back in 1956 & what Maya did was actually morally wrong. Maya could very well be tagged as a homewrecker if Dev & Riya had a happy marriage and Maya's entry somehow messed that up. But Dev & Riya's marriage was not a happy one & Dev didn't need any convincing to indulge in that extra marital affair with her. Both Maya & Dev were equally responsible in my opinion. So no, Maya was not really a "homewrecker" either, though she was a cheater for sure.
I think people feel less anger towards Mastani because she more than paid for her "transgressions." She had a very difficult life, and ultimately died in captivity. Rani and SRK on the other hand were shown to have a happy ending, and even received the blessings of their original partners. That's probably why that rankles more.
IKR, if people are not happy with their partners or don't love them, why don't they just leave? This way they can find someone better and let their partners have that chance too. It's unfair on both if both continue to live an unhappy marriage/relationship and either one of them takes up cheating as the last resort. Maya sure didn't love her husband but she could have left him first if she wasn't able to develop feelings for him or found him incompatible, because Rishi (Abhishek) loved her a lot and was kept in the dark throughout by his cheating wife, I mean what was she expecting when she confessed to him with all that rona dhona, would he be okay with it? Knowing about your wife's affair with another man after so long and the wife expecting you to take her back just because the "affair" was over was way too much. I didn't like how the makers tried to portray Rani as some victim here, she was a cheater, period!! And the less said about Dev(Shahrukh) the better, he was just an arrogant prick who shamelessly cheated on his wife tooOriginally posted by: Tara_Rum_Pum
Agree that she was wrong. But, bold: She knew what she was doing, was wrong. She was deliberately cheating. And that's what makes her unapologetic.
If only she divorced first before acting on her feelings.
That would have been a better story too. And maybe they would have been a likeable pair. Like Awaamkijaan said, yeah not all partners are compatible.
Maya that character pissed me off so much! I also hated srks character

I'm pretty sure the movie was a love letter to KJo's bestie Aditya Chopra. He was going through the same thing at the time - having an affair with Rani. He was married to his childhood friend Payal and his parents were really against the idea of him breaking up the marriage.
SRK played the character as an arrogant and annoying @sshole so I didn't mind how it was done. There was no great sympathy-craving on his part but Rani's acting pissed me off so much. The constant crying and whining. Every random line was turned into this huge painful earthshaking trauma by Rani. She was acting like she was going to get tortured when she herself chose to go to the hotel room. 🤣It was all pointless because instead of feeling sad for her, I was getting irritated by her crocodile tears.
IKR, the movie was trying too hard to portray both the characters as some victims of a loveless/strained marriage but what people forget is, cheating is always a CHOICE, nobody or nothing forces you to cheat on your partner.Even Riya and Rishi were in an unhappy marriage with their respective partners but did they cheat? Nope. I felt zero sympathy for both Maya and Dev, because they chose to keep their spouses in the dark and continued their love affair shamelessly!! They both deserved each other!!Originally posted by: hotchoco

Rani, she was the pictionary definition of despicable.
Personally hated Rani's character more. Both Rani and SRK's characters were so darn unlikable. Not only did they cheat, but they cheated behind everyone's back. They destroyed their partners, destroyed their families. They played with their lived one's trusts. They were cowards.
Mastani's love from Bajirao was also gross but for me it was tad bit more tolerable than KANK shit. Given the time period a second wife wasn't unheard of. Mastani also in her head wasn't a homewrecker, she wanted her big happy family with Kashibai, where they both sing and dance together and love Bajirao. She was braver than Maya. She loved Bajirao openly and married him. In her case, Bajirao was more of a culprit since he betrayed Kashi.
Rani’s character. Two families got ruined
Mastani was Muslim and it is allowed there also that was another time period
Neither of them were "homewreckers" cuz the men in both scenarios wrecked their own homes.
Having said that, Mastani was mental and unlikeable with her ever-dazed-in-love eyes but Rani in KANK was much more irritating.
If you feel "obligated" to marry someone or drag out a relationship with someone and try to stick it out just because you feel indebted to them or their parents, you are already being unfair to them and to yourself and setting yourself up for failure. Her only moral obligation was HONESTY and she failed there.
And if your relationship/marriage isn't working out for you, have the integrity to rip the band-aid off like she does when she actually confesses to cheating in this scene.

How come she mustered up the courage for that conversation but couldn't tell him that the relationship wasn't working out for her while she was ahead?!
