Bold- I don’t think he is morally decent. He says he is. But which morally decent guy throws his wife out at night, deny her food, calls her pagal?
When I say morally decent - I mean it in the broadest sense. He does not take pleasure in torturing others, does not take advantage of other people, is shown to genuinely be concerned about his family. Is he patriarchal- yes, very. His abusive action was certainly immoral.
I don’t agree about conditional love- Aai loved him unconditionally and the whole family did love him too. He is the raja beta. If they have ever disliked him that’s only because of marrying Sai.
I disagree about the Chavans. The Chavans are not capable of love - they don't care about anybody and their 'love' is all about control. Have first hand seen too many families like Chavans (minus the criminal element) - they seem very normal and caring from outside but there is not even an ounce of concern in their heart...all they want is control - children from such families are pretty messed up. Ashwini does love him unconditionally but she was fighting a difficult battle herself and therefore may not have been able to protect Virat from the the toxicity. Can be argued either ways since we do not have sufficient information.
complex grey- exactly. He’s made to be something else and justified because he is the male lead. But in essence he is a complex character.
He is complex grey even without the abusive traits. He is patriarchal, self-absorbed due to his insecurities and often has double standards.
Things in madness- I consider that to the real Virat. His words and actions cannot be so different otherwise.
Sometimes I feel Virat is Rono. No difference really. Virat's mannerisms were softened to gain acceptance from the audience - which only added to the confusion. In that sense Rono seems a more honestly written character - atlleast it is written exactly the way he is supposed to be.
If they truly wanted to change the characterization and make him more relatable, they should have done away with the abusive traits.
