How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

I'm a seasoned ITV viewer. I know the variety that exists. Over the years, I've sampled some and devoured many. Even with all that, SAAKK is special.

My love affair with the show started with the first hug! How can a simple hug between two characters be so powerful? I know many who started the show at the same time as me. I still don't know what exactly pulled me in. I'm glad I gave this show a chance!! So let's recount all the reasons why it's one of the best shows on ITV!!

  1. The story - The message is strong and is needed to be heard. A woman who has the strength to stand up against the wrongs done to her by society. She stands up against her abusive father and brother and brother in law, who verbally and physically abuse the woman of the family. She stands up against a sexist society that deems her only good for marriage and maintaining a home. She stands up against a society that would rather push her into a marriage against her will to an alcoholic NRI than sit at home unmarried. In school, she stands up against ragging and lying and cheating. She continued to stand up for consensual marriage and for the haq of the woman who helped her pursue her dreams.
  2. The characters - Shaurya and Anokhi first and foremost. They are sketched out so well, from the very beginning, you can get in their corner. Anokhi who starts as an ambitious woman who fights for her right to education in a highly patriarchal society. Shaurya starts as a bonafide misogynist who is against women working outside the home and stands in the way of Anokhi's success. In the last 6 months and 150+ episodes, these two characters fell in love and are learning to compromise so they can walk the path of life together. All the other characters are great anchors for this story. The Sabherwal clan that consists of sexist bade papa, manipulative badi ma, devious chachu, delicate chachi, absent dad, missing mom, oblivious bhai, struggling bhabhi, and artificial twin sisters. While the Bhallas have domineering papaji, fragile mummyji, useless bhaiyya, weak di, and abusive jiju. Let's not forget our incompetent ACP and our love-guru Reema!
  3. The actors - KV and Deba!! These two are the jewels in the SAAKK crown. Their chemistry shows through in Shakhi and their hard work shines in the amazing episodes we've witnessed.
  4. The CVs and PH - In 150+ episodes, the show has never felt like a copy of another ITV show in its plot. The unique ways that the writers handle situations deserves an applause. Every Sunday the fandom predicts what's going to happen. The next week, the writers deliver their own unique take. They never indulge in unnecessary drama or drag a storyline. The pacing of the show keeps the viewers on their toes. There's nothing typical about this show! They've handled a pandemic, a shooting bubble, location changes and ill actors.
  5. The title song - Yeh matlab diyan ne galaan, Sunn gor karle ve, Haye mareya ni je hal, Ishq ik hor karle ve, Langh chir chana va hoke majboor aavega, Jo tera hoyega, zaroor aayega, Kinni vi ho yaara challa door jayega; Kyun puche naa koi haal mera, Hai khud se yeh hi sawal mera, Arre darta hai kyun tu parindey, Khuda ko hai khayaal tera, Beech hawa mein rehene wale, Zameen pe ek din aayega; Ishq tabah hai, ishq hai marham, Ishq hai rog’ch nuh, Pyaar kare jo pagal ajj kal ankhan log ohnu, Bade kinare zameen val nu, zaroor tu ik din payegae. Lyrics credit to Deepshi!
  6. The couple - ShaKhi has my whole heart! Two individuals who craved love, found it in each other! They had a slow realization period, but once they knew, they told each other. There was no hiding and no shyness. They are two individuals who knew what and whom they wanted. They also realized the reality of their situations - professor vs student; middle class vs upper class; rich vs poor; misogynist vs feminist.

I could go on and on about this show, which I do every day after watching the episode; my EDT review and character thesis are proof of that! I hope this show continues to surprise and entertain me!

Look Jiggy, I wrote it!!

Thanks for the lyrics Deepshi!

A special thanks to those(y'kno who you are) that continue to engage with everything I write, which adds to my experience with the show.
