Life after Death
Part A – It Hurts So Much
Masi sat in the dimmed room, the flow of tears steady as she looked at her son, lying on the bed, heavily sedated, and clutching his daughter Ganga. Her mind and heart seem to have numbed from the shock of what happened in the last few hours. How happy they had all been this morning. The smiling face of Bani had seen them off on their excursion, no one having an inkling of the tragedy that would wipe out the happiness.
The sight of her munna hugging the lifeless body of his wife, screaming for her to wake up seemed to be permanently pasted in front of her. How hard Adi and Nattu had tried to get him to release her, so the police could do its job. Eventually the inspector had called the doctor who had jabbed Jai with tranquilizer to remove him away from the body. There was hushed flurry of activities happening in the house. Adi was waiting for the release of the body from the police, waiting to perform last rites on the body that should be done by Jai. The doctor had advised them to keep Jai under sedation, he would be in no condition to function normally for a few days.
Masi caressed Ganga forehead, the little girl who was way too mature for her age was dealt with immeasurable blow at such a tender age. She understood too well her mother would never come back, they would never be the happy family she had so much desired. In sleep the father and daughter seem to derive some comfort from each other.
Masi could hear the whimpering coming from the nursery where Rano was struggling to get the babies to sleep. Did they feel her death too? Do they know she is not coming back?
In a dark room a figure sat hunched on the floor rocking herself. The rapture she had felt had been tarnished when Jai had pushed her roughly away from him. No amount of cajoling from her had any effect on him, instead he his eyes had showered angry fire on her. She had felt scorched from his look. This not what was supposed to happen? He was supposed to lay his head on her bosom and let her comfort him. He should be lying in her arms seeking solace from her.
A shrill laughter escaped from her. Meera's mind remembered how after she had killed Bani her eyes had blazed with victory when she had looked at herself in the mirror. Yes, she couldn't believe how easy it had been…oh she loved her brother Mohan for telling her to go out and grab what she wanted. And she had done it, it had been so easy, so easy to kill her…to kill his wife. She had earlier savoured each moment again as she sat in a tub filled with warm water scented with fragrant oils. But they had spoiled her joy, his masi would not let her near him, how she hated them all. She hated them all, they were all a barrier between her and her love for Jai.
Well she had come this far, she was not going run away now. She knew what she had to do to get close to Jai...yes she will give him time to come out of the shock and then she will make her move. In the meantime she will make sure his kids get attached to her, she already had Ganga entwined around her...it wouldn't take long for the babies to love being in her arms...yes she will use those babies to get him. Meera flipped her head back as gurgled laughter rose in her. She couldn't wait to call her brother Mohan up and tell him of her little victory. But she had to be careful...yes she had to be careful she did not reveal too much to anyone, not even her brother. Who knows what he would spill when he consumed too much alcohol which he was prone to do.
Masi stood up and went into the bathroom and washed her face. She went into the nursery and stood next to Rano. Putting her hand on Rano's head, "Why don't you go and get some rest while they are sleeping. I will wake you up when they wake up."
Rano looked up, her eyes filled with tears, "No masi. You take rest. I will make a bed here in the nursery and lie down. I don't want to leave them alone...I can't leave them alone...didi wouldn't want me to leave them alone." The tears flowed, unstoppable now as Rano remembered her di...her di who had not seen much happiness in her short life was taken away once again from her.
