Chapter 7

Jalal was passing Rukaiya’s room he decided to check on Rukaiya, when he was announced in, he went in to find Jodha already present in the room . She sat in the kursi cutting fruits and arranging them on a plate for Rukaiya. “Pranaam Sahanshah.” She said. “ Aaap itni subha.” He asked. “ Ji jo kaam aapne humein diya hai uske liye ana to padega hi.” She answered. She did not speak much, she went back to makeing the medicines she was makeing. Jalal looked at her, he then goes and sits withRukaiya.

Jodha had been working all day she was tired. She had been resting on her bed with her head on the head rest. When moti came in she found that she had dosed off. Moti shook her head in sad ness. A fiesty and proud princess she could not understand why Jodha was putting up with all this.

Jalal couldn’t sleep he was feeling restless without reason. He couldn’t understand why seeing Jodha getting insulted was not going down well for him. The fact that she was quiet about the whole thing was eating him up. He went out of his room as he felt restless . He looked towards Jodha’s room to find Radha coming out of her room with a covered plate. He approached Radha“ yeh kya Jodha begum ne khana nahi khaya?.” He asked. “ Ji woh so chuki hai Sahanshah .” She answered looking down. Jalal nodded and dismissed her. He went into Jodha’s room to find her lying resting her head on the head rest. Jalal felt really bad.

The next few days were the same by the end of the day when Jalal passed her room she had gone to sleep without food. Then the black day came when Jalal recived the news of Rukaiya’s miscarriage. Everything fell apart around him.

Jodha stood in the center of the Deewan e Khaas, faceing the wrath of Shahenshah. “ Sab jhoot tga. Aapne Rukaiya ki dekhbhal ka jhoota natak kiya aur phir apna badla leliya" Billowed Jalal . Jodha shook her head “ Nahi Shahanshah. Humein eyesa kuch nahi kiya. Ambe maa ki saugandh. Hum ayesa kiyun kareinge.” But Jalal was not ready to listen “Inhe Apne kamrein mein nazar bandh kardijiye.” He ordered. "Nazar bandh, sirf Nazar bandh. Iska to maut milni chahiye." Rukaiya screamed. " Bas... Abhi kuch sabith nahi hua hai." Jalal answered in a stren voice.

Jodha sat at her kanha’s feet, a Rajvanshi princess a mughal begum but now... why did kanha do this to her. She couldn’t understand where she had gone wrong. “ Hey Kanha. Kinyu maine kya bigara kisi ka.” She kept her head on her kanha’s feet. Just then Rukaiya was announced in Jodha looked up in fear. “ bat zaat. Rajvanshi” Rukaiya came rushing up to her and held her by her hair. “ teri wajah se mere saare sapne tut gaye. Main tujhe nahi chodungi.” She screamed as she hit her head on the wall. Jodha fell to the ground, she rushed to hit her again but this time was stopped by Jalal “ Rukaiya. Kya kar rahiho.” He came to her. “ tum itni badi himakat kaise kar sakti ho ek nazar bandhse milne kaise ayi. Or upar se us par haat uthaya.” Jalal gave her a cold look.“ is do takeki Rajvanshi ko main.” She rushed at jodha again.” Bas jao.” He said with a voice full of authority. Jalal found her lying on the ground unconscious. Even though he thought that she had wronged her he couldn’t leave her on the floor. He picked her up and laid her on the bed.

The Hakim was called. Jodha was badlyhurt. Treatment started.

In the mean time Jalal confronted Rukaiya “ Yeh kya behudgi thi Rukaiya. Tum ek nazar band ke kamre mein jaa kar us par hamla kaise kar sakte ho.”Jalal roared. “ Kya mughal sultanat ke kanun ki koi parwah nahi. Bina chan been kiye tum use aysi saza kaise de sakte sirf saq ke bina par.” Jalal asked. “ usne mere sare khwab tod diye. Hum Marriun uz zamani banna chahte the. Usne woh haqhumse chinliya.hum use maaf nahi karenge. Use saza milegi.” She snapped. “ saza use milegi jo saza ka haqdaar hoga.”Jalal

The next day he asks his officers to stay in high alert. He sits in his chamber thinking back to the time when hefound Jodha continiluously taking care of Rukaiya. Somewhere back on the mindhe knew she just couldn’t do it. Something hurt inside knowing that could be a possibility.

Jodha sat in her chamber she couldn’couldn't forget the humiliation she has been through. She had to do something to prove her iinnocence.

Today when she was returning from thetemple she heard the taunts of the subjects some called her a murderer and somea witch. The mob was angry at loosing their heir to the throne. She felt hot tears run down her eyes. “ Kiyun kanha... kiyun. Maine tokuch bhi nahi kiya phir kiyun.” She went to the balcony and stood looking out.She had not left her chamber for a week. She was in house arrest. As she lookedat the corner of the anguri bag she saw a bandhi digging the corner of theground “ Woh udher kiyun khod rahi hai". On close observation she saw thatit was the one helping her out when she was preparing Rukaiya begam’s medicine.Hadn’t she tasted it. Then how. She would have to get hold of her.

Jalal sat on his throne “ Shahenshah,Reva ke maharaj humare baagiyon ko panha derahe hai.”Adgha Sahab informed him.“ Thik hai Pir Muhammad ko kooch karne ko kaho.” Jalal ordred. He seemedpreoccupied. “ Jahanpanha, yeh un jagaho ka naam hai jo humne humare jhande keundar liya inka mehsul thik karni hogi” Informed Abid Ali. “ humm sham ko baithte hai. Paani ka nahar banane kakya huwa?”What about the irrigation plans for the eastern region of Agra, thevillages were faceing water scarcity.” He asked.” Sir we have spoken to thearchitects they are looking into the matter.” Answered Atgah sahab.” Get onwith it soon it will be summer.” He ordered. “ Is there anything else?” “ Noyour majesty.” Answered Atgah sahab.

Hira asked the maid who brought inher food “ Sham ka khana Sabina ke haat se bhejna.” She said.

In the evening Sabina brought in her food.As she was about to leave jodha stopped her. “ Kal tum baag ke uttari kone meinkya khod rahi thi?” She asked in a stern voice. “ K...Kuch nahi begum sahiba.”The maid stammered. Hira picked up herdagger and put it on the maids neck “ sach bolo warna abhi tumhara sar kaatdenge.” Jodha ordered. The maid was shaking in fear “ h... hum e... ek dibbichupa rahe the.” She stammered. “ Kaisi dibbi" Jodha asked. “Z.....z....zejer ki.” She answered “Kiyun...kiyun.”Jodha asked. “ Humein kisine p... paise diye the wih zaher Rukaiya b...begum ke dawa mein milane keliye.” She answered “ p...par timne to dawa chakhi thi phir” jodha asked. “ wohhumne kaat leli thi.” She answered. “ tum yehi rukogi.” Jodha walked up to thesoilders “ humein Sahanshah se milnahai. Unhe khabar bhajiye.” She ordered.

About an hour later Jalal arrived. “Aap humein yiun nahi bula sakte. Aap nazar bandh hai.” Jalal said wothirritation “ Baat hi kuch ayisi thi.” She said then pointed to the maid “ Yehsab kya hai, aap zara khulase sebatayengi.” Jalal asked. “ Woh hum nahi yeh bataengi aapko. BATAO.” Jodhaordered. The maid narrated the happenings. “ Kya.... kisne.” Jalal roared. Hepicked up the dagger lying on the table and pointed at tge maid “ Batao warna"“ Sahanshah hum sach mein nahi jaante. Humne unka chehra nahi dekha.” Shetrembled. “ Sipahi.giraftar karlo isse.” Jalal roared.

He couldn’t meet her eyes, and whenhe did he found them cold and emotion less. “ Humein maaf kar dijiye Jodha.Paar saare sabut aapke khilaf the.” He pleaded his case. “ Ab aap ke mafi kahumkya karenge Shahenshah.” She turned to look at him with cold eyes. “ Aapnehumein ek rakkasa ke saat tulna ki hum chu rahein. Aap ne humara darja ek badhike sthan me kiya hum phir bhi chup rahein. Paar jo ghrinit aarop aap ne hum parmada, usse humare samman ko bahit thes pahuchaya aapne. Humne Harem mein sab kighruna sahi. Rukaiya begum ne humpar haath uthaya. Par ab bas. Aab aap humeinakela chid dijiye. Jayiye asp.” She said in a cold voice. Jalal could see itwas a calm before a storm. He left withoutca word.

Jalal couldn’t sleep, he could almost feel the pain in Jodha’s voice. He feltguilty for the first time.

Jodha felt hot tears trickle down hereyes. Though she had proved herself iinnocent in front of the king, but still shecouldn’t stop crying.

In herroom a very drunk Rukaiya fumed in anger. Jalal had ordered her out of the roombecause of that bloody Rajvanshi. She wouldmake her pay. She took away her key to being Marrium uz zamani. Bloody hakima now said ahe could never be mother. “ Hum aapko kabhi mauf nahi karenge. Hum aapko is harem se nikal ke rahenge.” She screamedto herself.

Chapter 8

The next day in Deewan e khaas everyone was shocked to see Jodha enter andtake her seat. Rukaiya came up to her “ Tum shayad bhul gayi ho ke tum ek nazarbandh ho aur yeha ane se tumhe pabandi hai.” She said glaring at her. “pehlibaat humein Shahenshah ne yeha upastit hone ko kaha hai. Aur isi liye aap kouttar dena hum awashak nahi samjhte.” Jodha answered she was actually verydisgusted by the unethical behaviour that Rukaiya seemed to be meting out. “Tum ek do take ki Rajvashi hokar mujhse zaban ladati ho.” Rukaiya gritted outand was about to slap her but was stopped by Marrium Makhani. “ BAS RUKAIYA...yeh kya himakat hai. Bhulo mat yeh Deewan e khaas hai. Isliye baith jao. Jodhatum baito.” She ordered. Rukaiya went back to her seat after giving Jodha an angry glare.

Shahenshah was announced in.

“ Hum aaj yeha maujud hai ek zaruribaat par charcha karne keliye. Kuch din pehele, humne ek faisla sunaya tha. AurJodha begum ko nazar bandh kiya tha. Yeh faisla humne Rukaiya begum ke hamal kegirne ka kasoorwaar unko mante huye kiya tha. Par haal hi mein humein maalumchala hai ki asal kasurwaar koi aur hai.” Jalal spoke, he signaled Adgha sahab,“ Muljim ko andar laya jaye.” He said. “ Sabina baano, tum par ilzaam hai kitum ne Jodha begum ke banaye huye dawa jo unhone Rukaiya begum ke liye banayatha us mein tumne zeher milaya tha. Kya yeh ilzaam sach hai?” Asked Adgha ssahab.Sabina looked down and nodded. “ kiyun kiya tumne eyesa?” Adhga sahab askedagain. “ Ji hummein eyesa karne ke liye kaha gaya tha. Paise diye gaye the.”She answered. “ Kiske kehne par?” Adhgah asked again. “ humne nahi dekha humeinkhat aya tha. Usmein mujhse milne ko kaha gaya tha.” She answered. “ Kaha milnatha?” he asked again. “ Humein Agra ke bajar mein milna tha. Waha chouk kemazar per jab main pahuchi to ek thaila rakha tha aur us saath ek chitthi. Jismein likha tha ke mujhe Begum sahiba ko zeher dena tha aur paise the. Maine zehermangwai aur phir....” she stammered to a stop. “ Isska sar kalam kar diya jaye.Le jao isse. Kal subha suraj nikal ne se pehle se is ka sar kalam hoga.”Jalalordered.

Rukaiya was stunned. She did not knowwhat to say. “ Jodha begum. Aap samne aiye.” Jalal requested. Jodha came to thefront of the throne. “ Jodha begum. Hum aap se maafi mangna chate hai. Humne bina soche samjhe aap par ilzaam lagaya.Iskeliye hum sarminda hai. Hum aap ko nazar qaid se azad karte hai.” Jalalapologized. Jodha did not say anything. She gave him the same cold glare. “ Aap apne khwabga mein laut saktehai.” Jalal stated. Jodha did pranaam and turned and left. Jalal knew she wouldnot react and she did not.

When Jodha reached her room she ranto her kanhas feet and stayed there. “Itni pida kiyun kanha. Kiyun.” Jodha decided to stay away from every one. Shedid not want to be the targwt of any more insults.

Radha came inro the room ro findJodha sitting all alone in front of her kanha murti. She knew she was hurt also knew she wouldntshow any pain.

Soon the incident was forgotten. And lifein the Agra palace went on in the same way. But some people in the herem where notsatisfied. They wanted revenge. They decided to come together. Rukaiya wasstill fuming from the recent happening and still blaming Jodha for herunfortune and Mahamanga wanted to take advantage. “ Aaj to sirf use maaf kiyahai begun e khas jald hi woh aap ki jagah bhi le lwngi.” She goaded. “ Ha Ha Ha..... ayesa kabi nahi hoga. Meri jagah koi nahi le sakta. Jalal hamesha se merimuthi mein hi rahenge.” Rukaiya dismissed Mahamanga. “ dekhte hai.”

The next day at deewan e khas Jodhawas missing. Hamida bano called Radha to her side. “ Jodha bwgum kaha hai Radha?."Shw asked her. “ Maaf ki jiye Mallika e azam, main ne use bahut manane kikoshis ki par woh nahi ayi.” She answered looking down. “ Boli ke uski zaruratkisi ko nahi yeha.” Radha answered. Hamidafelt really angry at the treatment her innocent Jodha. She gave an angry lookat Jalal who was busy with the court proceedings.

Jodha sat at her room balcony on themarble swing looking at the horizon where the sun took a dip into the yamunariver. She wondered what was the purpose of her life. A marriage which washardly a marriage. She had so many dreams about her marriage but her marriageturned out to be just a business deal. Just then Mallika e azam was announcedin. Jodha got up from her seat and covered her head. “ Pranaam Ammijaan.” She greeted her. “ Yeh kya hai Jodha aapDeewan e khas mein kiyun nahi aye.” She asked. “ Bas Ammi jaan hum ... nahi chahtethe ki hum kisi aur ko thes pahuchaye. Aur phir hum jaante hai kuch logon kochod kar hum koi pasand nahi karta. To hum sab se dur reh na chahte hai. JabSahahanshah hi humein nahi chahte to, hum unke samne nahi ayenge.” Sheanswered. “ Jodha tum ek sherni ho. Hum nahi chahte tum ayese haar jao. Nahi.Tumhe apne kiamat se ladna hoga. Suno tumhare nikha ko huye ek mahina ho chukahai. Hum chahte hai tum aur Jalal jaa ke ajmer sarif ke darga mein jake aao.”She ordered. “ Par Ammijaan....” Jodha started “ kuch nahi.... hum koi par warsunna nahi chahte. Tum aur Jalal kaal hi Ajmer Sharif ke liye niklo ge.” Hamidaordered.

Hamida left a very confused Jodha toprepare for the trip the next day. Jalal had noticed the absence of Jodha indeewan e khas. He had stayed quite knowing that it was partly his fault. Butshe was the one who rejeced him. He was still dying to have her in his arms. Hewas still waiting. Hurting her was hurting him as well but he wanted revenge aswell.

Hamida bani was announced in. “ AadabAmmijaan. Aap yeha.” He greeted his mother. “ Haan humein tumse kusch baatkarni hai. Tumhare bartaw se Jodha ko bahut thes pohchi hai.” She scolded him.Jalal was quite. ?” khair. Hum chahtehai ke aap aur Jodha begum Jaye aur khwaja garib nawas ke darga par dua padhkaraye.” Hamida ordered. Jalal looked at his ditermined mothet. He nodded quitely.“ Hum chahte hai ke aap dono kaal subah hi nikal jaye.” Hamida stated again. “Jo hukum Ammijaan.” Jalal answered. Hamida nodded and left.

Early next morning Jalal and Jodhaleft for Ajmer Sarif with a small entourage as a very angry Rukaiya looked on.“ Akele kaise chod du dono ko. Jalal to pehle se hi....” She thought.

On the other hand Jodha was alsoworried “Sahanshah ke sath akele. Hey kanha madad kar.” She prayed aoftly.

The journey began, Jodha moved thexirtain of her palki to look out as they passed the agra city. In the front oftheir entourage she saw Jalal on his horse. She shifted back into her palki. She was still not ready to forgive him.

Jalal knew that she had not forgivenhim. May be he hadn’t tried harder. He had wanted to hurt her just as much ashe had been hurt by her rejection. But things had gone out of hand. He did feelguilty of what had occurred.

It was evening when the reachedkheda. They decided to set up a camp. Jodha had requested for a separate tent.As Jodha retired to her tent her eyes met Jalal’s, she could see the guilt inhis eyes but, was too hurt to forgive him. She turned away and left.

Jalal felt a weird pain in his heart,he wanted her to forgive him. But she was not ready to relent.

The next day they left early in the morning.bymid day they were at AjmerSharif.

Jalal taught Jodha to pray accordingto their religion. Jodha felt the same peace she felt whwn she visited the temple.After the prayers the maulavis blessed the king and the queen. “ Alla aapkoumar daraz kare. Aapki Jodi taa qayamat bani rahe. Allah jald hi aap ko aap kemohabbat ki nishani bakshe.” The maulavi chanted. Jodha and Jalal looked ateach other. At that moment they felt what the malvis had said was impossible.

Jodha was surprised to see thisdiffrent aangle of the emperor. She sawa devotee and not a king. She saw a man who had immense love for his god. “ Ekmanushya jo apne bhagwan se itna pyar or aadar karta ho, uske paass hriday nahona yeh na mumkin hai.” Jodha looked at the emperor as they returned to thecamp site. “Nahi Shahanshah hum nahi maante ki aapke paas hriday nahi hai. Yehbaat bilkul asatya hai.” Jodha thought.

The next day Jalal decided to gohunting. Jodha was a very soft hearted person, and hated hunting, hencerefrained from accompanying him. She stayed back in the camp site. Around midday she got bored and started wondering around the forest that surrounded thecampsite.

In the mean time in the inner deapthsof the forest, the stage was set for the hunt. Jalal looked at the machan thatwas set on the tree. At a little distance a gaurd stood holding the lease of ahunting dog. Mahuwa who was the Emperor’s favourite tried to get away from thelease. “ Bas Mahuwa ruk jao. Abhi zarurat nahi hai tumhari. Sant bachhe.” Heordered. At the sound of the disturbance in the air Jalal mounted the machanand got ready with his musket. There was a stir in the distance and the birdsand monkeys started making a chaos. Jalal pointed the gun towards the sound andwaited. Just then there was a movement in the bushes. Mahuwa growled , ready onhis back feet to jump on anything untoward. Jalal waited with bated breath sweatdripping from his side in anticipation. Suddenlyout jumped the beast with a growl. It moved around serveying the periphery. Itsmovemwnt were slow and elegant. It looked up to the machan sensing a presence there.Yellow amber eyes met the dark mysterious brown ones. It was now a battle of witsbetween the emperor of Hinsusthan with thee king of the jungle. Jalal smirked andthen pulled the trigger. As soon as he pulled the trigger as if it was a singnalan arrow came zipping through the air and hit Jalal on his back. “Ah....” Jalalmoaned as he fell of the machan. Adgha sahab who stood next to him was surprised.“Sipahiyo dekho ustaraf se teer aya hai dhundo use. Jao.” He ordered. “ Firoz jaldiShahenshah ko kheme me lechalo.”

Jodhakept feeling restless. She looked towards the area where she had seen Jalal disappearwith his troops for the hunt. “Mujhe itni chinta kiyun ho rahi hai. Itna vichlitkiyun hai mera man.” She thought. It was high noon. The sun was above the head.She looked again when she heard sound of horse hoofs. She stepped forward to seewho ir was, when shw saw Adgha shahb approch on a horse. Behind him he saw two soldierscarrying a make shift cot with .... “SHAHANSHAH....” shw screamed running towardsthem “ Kya huwa hai Adgha sahab.” She asked as tears shone in her eyes. “ begumsahiba Shahanshah par hamla huwa hai. Kisine unpar teer chalaya hai" he informed.Jodha felt cold fear run down her spine as tears flowed on its own accord from hwreyes. She touched the tears in shock “ Anshu ek ayese manushya ke liye jinse humghrina karte hai .par kiyun???” Jodha asked herself
