I have a question about genderqueer and non-binary people. Are they the same? If not, how are they different? I did some reading on the internet but it has only left me more confused.
Also, how does a non-binary person define their sexual orientation? Is it similar to trans people, wherein gender identity is used as the basis? Since they don't identify with the gender binary, how does this work?
Thank you, and apologies if my questions seem too inane/ignorant!
I am currently reading "What's The T" by Juno Dawson (who I also met a few years ago). It deconstructs a lot of the terminology.
I would recommend it - and also wanna start by saying that a lot of the terminology is still undergoing change and evolving, so that's why there's confusion. There are even Trans/Non-Binary, Gender Non-Conforming people that are unsure of what all the differences are.
I think Genderqueer and Non-Binary are pretty much the same. Other terms such as Genderf*ck and Androgynous fall under the same category. I think it just depends on what the individual feels better represented by. In the UK the term "Non Binary" is seen on forms and surveys, whereas Genderqueer is more a radical term and more of a "F *** Y **" to societal norms.
How does a NB person define their sexuality?
The same way as anyone else would. They could be heterosexual, homo, bi, pan or other. They might not identify personally with the gender binary, but could be into girls exclusively, or femme presenting boys or pansexual or asexual or other.
