Chapter 6

Rukaiya was long asleep. But sleep evaded Jalal's eyes. He thought back to the days event, something seemed tohurt in his chest. The look she had given him was killing him. But then he wasstill fuming under her behaviour on the wedding night. He would get hisrevange. He looked back at Rukaiya who was pregnant. It had been her idea togift her something so inappropriate to show her her status in the harem. But hehad forgotten that his mother seemed to take a liking towards her. She had alsovisited them after the function “ Yeh kya tha Rukaiya? Tum begum e khas ho.Badshahi begum ho tum ayisi harkat kaise kar sakti ho. Aur Jalal tum ne yehhone kaise diya?” she had fumed. “ kuch baaton mein aap naahi pade to behtarhoga.” He said in a cold voice. “ par woh tumhari begum hai uski beizzatitumhari honi chahiye.” Hamida gave up shook her head and left.

Jodha had returned to her chambertrying her best to hold back her tears. She dropped on to her bed sobbingsoftly. She had felt the snickers of all the harem ladies as she had come backfrom the deewan e khas. What kind of a man was this who insulted his own wifein front of everyone? But she was determined she would not break so soon.

The next morning after her bath shesent Radha to get flowers for her puja. She then sat and made her garland.After the Puja she went out to the tulsi manch and did the tulsi puja, her eyesseemed to wonder towards the balcony next to hers where Jalal was exercising,he was naked waist up. His muscular body was glistening with sweat, Jodha triedto look away but her eyes did not want to listen to her.

Jalal could feel her eyes on him. Burninghis back. But he pretended not to care. After sometime he heard her ankletsgoing back to her room. He picked up the towel to fond Adgha sahab standing infront of him “ Aadab Sahanshah, Malwa se kuch khabar hai.” Adgah reported. “Kya khabar hai?” Jalal asked” Shahenshah Adham Khan ne loot macha rakhi hai,budhe bacche Auratein kisiko nahi baksha. Baz Bahadur ki Rani ke saath bhi.Phir unhone khudkhusi kar li. Loot ka pura saman bhi Agra nahi bheja gaya.”Adgha answered. Jalal was fuming angry. “ Hum khud kal Sharangpur ke liyeniklenge. Aap taiyari kijiye. Par dhyan rahen yeh khabar kisi ke bhi kaano taknahi pahuchna chahiye. Khas kar ke badi ammi ki.” Jalal ordered.

Jodha entered the Deewan e khas forits proceedings. She could see the begum of tge harem were all laughing at her.As she approached the seats laid out for the begums one of the begum said “Arre Aap yeha. Humien to laga ki aap ko aapki khas jagah malum chal gayi hogi.Yeh begumon ki baithne ki jagah hai, Jo tohfa aap ko Rukaiya begum ne diya usseto aap ko khanhi aur hi hona chahiye.” Everyone else burst out laughing. “Khamos Najma begum. Yeh mat bhuliye ki yeh Sahanshah ki jayez begum hai jo aapnahi hai. To apne zaban ko lagam dijye.” A voice came from behind. Jodha turnedto see a tall and beautiful lady walking towards them. “ aayiye Jodha begum.Tasreef rakhiye. Inpar dhyan mat dijiye. Hum Saleema sultan hai Sahanshah kidusri begum.” She said. Leading her protectively to her seat.

After sometime Jalal was announced inwith a ly of pomp. He took his seat amd the proceeding began. “ Sahanshah, Grami ka mausam anewalahai, pichle saal sukhe se humare sultanate ko bhut niksan hua tha. Humarekhayal se is saal himein pehle se kuch karna ho ga.” Atgah saab stated “ JiAdgah sahab mere khayal se ek pukhta mansuba banakar is par humein baat karnihogi.” Jalal stated. “ Saare mehsul jama par chuka hai.” He asked “ Ji bas Nagaur aur Ajmer ke sube se mehsulnahi aye. Sarifuddin ne bagawat chalu kiya hai.” Atgah Khan reported. “ Ek kaamkijiyeNagaur ke liye ek tukri bhejiye jishe agwani karenge Quli khan.” Jalalstated. “ Aur Maan Singh ki Taleem ki taiyari ki jiyecuski nigrani hum khudkarenge.” Jalal ordered. He looked at Jodha who was looking at him withquestioning eyes.

After the Deewan e khad was over asJodha returned to her cchamber. She started ffeelingweek. She had almostreached her room when she stareted feeling dizzy and fell to the floor.

Jalal was returning to his chambersto get ready to leave for Sarangpur in a few hours. As he came closer to hischamber he saw Jodha too was returning to her chamber, but she stopped in frontof her door holding her head. Moti who was standing by her held her hand.Before he could acknowledge the problem, Jodha fell to the floor, and fainted.“ JODHA BEGUM.” Jalal exclaimed and ran to her. He picked her up in his armsand took her into her chamber and lay her on her bed. “ Hakima ko bulao.” Heordered moti. As he sat next to Jodha rubbing her hand. “ Jodha begum...uthiye. Ya Alla .” After sometime the Hakima arrived along with her came Hamidabano as well as Mahamanga. “Kya baat haiJalal.” Hamida asked. “ Pata nahi Ammijaan yeh achanak behosh ho gayi.” Jalalanswered. They were closely followed by the hakima. She came and started hertreatment. Jalal stood close by looking at Jodha, something inside him was notliking the situation. Something keptnagging him, for some reason he felt like he had forgotten something. TheHakima looked at Radha “ Akhri baarthikse bhojan kab kiyatha Begum sahiba ne.” She asked. “ Ji woh teen din pehle.Jab hum Amer se niklen the.” She answered in a timid voice. “Kya?” Jalal lookedat her in shock. “ Par kiyun?” Jalal asked. “ Sahanshah. Rajvanshi sudh shakahari bhojan kartein. Vohmaas machi ka chuwa huwa bhi nahi khatein. Isi karan woh sirf fal aur mithaikha rahin thi.” Radha answered. “Unhone yeh kisi ko bataya kiyun nahi?” Jalalasked. “ Ji woh nahi chahti thi ki is chiz ko lekar koi hangama ho.” Radhaanswered. Hamida came and sat nearJodha, she caressed her head. “ Ya Allah meri bachi.” Hamida looked at Jalal in anger “ Aap unkesohar hai aap ko pata hona chahiye. Aap itne laparwah kaise ho gaye Jalal.”Hamida scolded him. This did not go down well with Mahamanga “ Gustakhi maaf homallika e aliya, Par ek mamyli raajvanshi ke liye itni zyada sahulatein....”she started “ BADI AMMI. Mamyli ho ya khaas woh baad ki baat hai. Jab wohhumari begum hai. Toh jimmedari humari banti hai. Galti to humse hui hai.” Helooked at Jodha. “ Mir Tamir ko bulaya jaye.” He ordered a soilder.

After sometime, he arrived. “ AadabJahanpanha... aap ne yaad kiy?” he asked. “ Hasn. Mahal ke uttari bhag meinJagah lhali hai waha ek Bawarchi khana banwaya jaye. Aur yeh kaam do se tin dinmein hona chahiye.” He ordered then he looked at Maham “ Badi aAmmi tab takhumare bawarchi khane ek kone ki safai karke alag karcdiya jaye. Aur nayebartan mangwaye jaye. Radha. Jodha begum ka khana aaj se alag se banaye jaye. oh haan ek hindu rasoiye ka intezam bhi kiyajaye.” He ordered looked at Jodha one last time and left. The whole incidentleft Maham in a shock.

The next day Jalal left forSarangpur. Maham unaware of all these, paid a visit to Rukaiya begum. “ Aadabbegum e khas.” She greeted her. “ Aadab Maham. Aap aaj yeha.” She asked. “Aapko wk khabar deni thi.” Maham infoemes with a smirk. “ Kya?” Rukaiya asked. “Shayad aap ko patanahi ke nayi bwgum kw liye nayi rasoi ban rahi hai. Ate hiwoh Sahanshah ko aapnw taraf khinch ne lagi hai. Yeh hi nahi behosh hone parJalal uae khus apnw baho mein utha kar andar le gayi.” Maham informed her.Rukaiya gave her an un effected look. “ Toh kya kehna chahti hai aap?” she asked.“Shahenshah ke itne sare begumat hai woh jisse chahe uthaye aap ko usse kya. “ she asked standing up gracefully and coming toMaham. “ hum aap se keh rahe hai woh un taraf jhuk rahe hai. Unke dil mein.” Mahamangastarted “ Aha ha ha haha.” Rukaiya let out a sarcastic laughter.” Dil?? Nahi hai unke paas. Aap jaa sakti hai humein aurcbhi kaam hai.” Rukaiyaturned away dismissing her.

Chapter 6

When Jalal entered Saharang pur theimage that met his eyes was that of a massacre. There were burning houseseverywhere. The markets had beendestroyed and looted. There was cries of pain mingled with the air. People hadfled in fear. “ Yeh kya kufr macha huwa hai yeha Atgah sahab?” Jalal asked. “PirMuhammad kaha hai bulai use.” Jalal ordered. After some time Muhammad wasbrought in “ Yeh tum ne hone kaise diya.? “ Jalal asked. “ Sahanshah Adham Khankisi ki nahi sun raha. Jo man aye kar raha hai.” Pir Muhammad informed. Jalal closed his eyes in anger, fisting hishands to control his explosive temper. He kicked the horse to ride towards theSaharngpur fort. An angry Jalal marched into the fort. He was greeted by thesoilders and the adhalis of thecfort. “ kaha hai Adham Khan.” He screamed inanger. The gaurd pointed to the upper chambers of the palace. Jalal approached AdhamKhans chamber , as he entered he found a very drunk Adham khan loling in thebedd with a concubine giving him a massage. “ ADHAM Gustakh.” Jalal screamed. Before Adham couldblink Jalal had him lying on the ground with his sword on his neck. “ Jalal tumyeha. Aur yeh kya kar rahe ho hum tumhare dudh bhaihai.” Adham stammered. “Usike wajah se zindaho abtak. Humari khamoshi ko humari kamzori mat samjho. Yehmat samjho ke hum apne ankhe band karke baithe hai. Kya kufr macha rakha haitumne yeha. Aurton , bachho aur budho ko maarne ki izzazat tumhe kisne di.”Jalal asked in a cold and angry voice. “ Jalal jung ke waqt kuch log to martehi hai.” Adham justified. “ kuch log hazaron ke tadat mein riyaya marein hai. Bazbahadur ki mangetar ko tumne kiyun chuwa.” Jalal shot fire at him. Khair tumAgra laut jao.” He ordered. “ par yeha.” Adham started. Jalal stopped him by risinghis hand. “ Yeha ka morcha aaj se PirMuhammad samhalenge.” Jalal answered and turned and left a fuming andrevengeful Adham behind.

In Agra Jodha had just recovered fromher weakness and was slowly trying to adjust with her environment. She had justfinished her puja when Rukaiya begum wss announced. “ Takhlia.” She orderd themaids. The maids left. “Toh kaisi hai aap?” she asked Jodha. “ ji hum ab thikhai.” Jodha answered. “ Aap ko is halat mein itna nahi chalna chahiye. Aaphumein bhi bula sakti thi.” Jodha suggested “Arre bahi nahi hum ayesa kaise karsaktein hai. Aap itni khas jo thehri.” Rukaiya said sarcastically. “Waise aapyeh rasoi wali baat humein nahi bata sakti thi. Shahenshah ke samne natak karneki jarurat nahi thi aap ko. Waise aap jyada itaraiye ga mat. Aapne unhe jeetnahi liye yeh sab karke. Aap ki aukat ab bhi wahi hai jo hum ne aap ko peheleehsas dilaya tha.” Rukaiya retorted woth a sarcastic laughter “ Achha! Agar yehbaat hai toh aap kiyun dar rahi hai. Agar humari pad utni su hai toh aap ko is tuchhaprani ke paas ane ki zarurat nahi thi.” Jodha answered with a smile. “tum jantiho tum kisse baat kar rahi ho?” Rukaiya asked in a cold voice “ haan bilkul. Humbegum e khas se baat kar rahi hai jo bahut hi ghamandi hai.” Jodha answeredagain. “ Tum humse bair leke is harem main nahi reh paogi. Hum Jalal ko tumharekareeb kabhi ane nahi denge.” Rukaiya screamed this time.” Sh sh sh sh ...itnauttejit mat hoiye. Humein apke harem ki dusri begumo ki tarha kamzor matsamjhiye. Hum ek Rajvanshi hai. Hum aap se nahi darte. Hum harem mein tikjayenge aur rahhi baat asp ke Sahanshah ki to unhe aap hi rakhiye humein koi dilchaspinahi.” Jodha answered with determination. Rukaiya was fuming she stompped herfoot and left.

Jalal had just entered the main gatesof the Agra palace. He looked up towards the harem to find all his begumsstanding their except Jodha. He felt a surge of disappointment in hia heartwhich soon turned into anger.

After he returned to his chamber and frEshenedup, Rukaiya was announced in “ Aadab Jalal.” She greeted him with a smile.Jalal was sitting on his bed and nursing a drink. “ kaisi hai aap. Aap ko yehanahi anachaiye tha. Hakima ne aap ko jyada chalne se manakiya hai.”Jalal.answered . “ hum thik hai.” She said sitting next to him and resting herhead on his shoulder. “ Harem ka kaamkaise chalraha hai?” he asked. “ Sab rhik hi hai.” Rukaiya answered. “ lagtahai aap apne harem se apna aiteram kho rahe hai.” Jalal said. “ Kiyun?” Rukaiyasat up in shock. “ Agar sab thik hai Rukaiya to Jodha humare isteqbal ke liyeharem ke baramde mein kiyun nahi thi?” He asked. Rukaiya laughed out loud “kiyun aye. Usne saaf sabdon mein keh to diya hai ki unhe aap mein koi dilchaspinahi. To fir kiun ayegi.” Rukaiya said looking at him with trimph. On the otherhand Jalal felt anger burst in him. He felt like breaking something. He lookedat Rukaiyas trimphant laugh and held her face between his finger and thumb andpulled her close “ hasiye mat aap.” He said in a cold voice. “ Kiyun bura laga?Par yeh sach hai. Hum to gaye the use uski aukat dikhane par uske tewar ufff.” Rukaiyalaughed again. This time Jalal got frustrated and pulled her into an angrykiss. Bitting her lips hard and with force. Rukaiya liked forcw she moaned intohim pushing herself into him almost forgetting that she was pregnant. Jalal slowly let her go. “ Aap jaiye aaram kijiye. Humare sar mein dard hai.” He dismissed her. Rukaiya got up and left indissapointment.

It was dusk when Shahanshah wasannounced into her room. Jodha had just finished her evening puja. She stood upand looked towards the door to find Jalal standing looking at her. “ PranaamSahanshahaap yeha?” she asked. “ Aap is tucch si prani ke kaksh mein kya karrahe hai?” She asked. “ Aap ko nahi lagta ke humare aane par aap ko harem kevaramde pe hona chahiye?” Jalal asked. “ Nahi humein nahi lagta.” Jodhaanswered in a nonchalant way. “ Jodha aap yeh byul rahein hai ke aap apneshauhar se hi nahi hindustan ke Sahanshah ke samne khere hai." Jalalanswered. “ pati .... pati jaisa kya kaam kiya aapne. Apkepatni ko bhare darbarme nachne wali kaha gaya aap chup rahe. To Hum patni kaise huye?” Jodharetorted. Jalal got angrier. He held Jodha’s wrist and twisted it around. “ Toaap ne kaunsa biwi hone ka fars nibhaya. Kaunsi biwi apne pati ko nikka ke raatkhanjar se maarne ki kosis karti hai.” Jalal answered in a dark voice. “ aapjaise crur Jallad se hum ghrina karte hai.” Jodha answered twisting her faceaway. “ toh hum bhi aap se nafrat karten hai.” Jalal said. “ Par aap jaantihai. Aap ki yeh khusbu... humein deewana banadeti hai.” Saying he nuzzeled thenape of her neck, and bit it softly. “ Shahanshah. “ Jodha shouted pushing himaway. Jalal stumbled back. He looked at Jodha who was breathing hard. “ dekhtehai aap kitne din berukhi dikhayengi.” Saying Jalal left.

The time of Rukaiya’s delivery wascoming near. Some one was required to be with her and take care of her all thetime. Her tantrums and anger was already on the high.

Mahamanga was dreading the time whenshe would become Marrium uz zamani. She could see that Jodha was also becomingsomewhat important. She had to do something soon.

One evening when Jalal had returnedfrom deewn e khas, she visited Jalal. “ Jalal kya aap ne socha hai ke aapRukaiya ke dekhbhal ke liye kise chunegi.” Mahamanga asked. “ Pata nahi badiammi hum kisi par aitbaar nahi kar pa rahe hai. Hum khud hi unki dekbhalkarlete, par himein jald hi bangal ki tafri karne jàna hai.” Jalal ansqwered. “hum kuch kahe. Humne suna hai ke Rajvanshi bahut imandaar hotein hai. Kiyun naaap Jodha begum se kahein ke woh Rukaiya ka khayal rakhe. Isse unka bhi waqtache se beet jayega.” She suggested. “ Hmm humein sochne ka waqt dijiye.” Jalalanswred. Jalal knew it would be a great insult to her if she was asked to do it.In a deep corner of his heart he knew that it was not the right thing to do buthis ego was hurt and he wanted revenge.

Jodha had just finished her bath and wasabout to start the puja, when the messenger from the Shahenshah arrived. “ Begumsahiba ke liye sandesha hai.” The messenger announced. “ Dijiye.” Radha took itand dismissed the messenger. “ kya hai Radha?” Jodha asked. Radha read the letterand was shocked. How could Shahenshah ask for such a demeaning thing to a Rajvanshiprincess. She was quite. “ Radha humne pucha kya hai?” she asked again. “ woh Shahenshahchahte hai... ki....” Radha faltered. “ uff lao idhar.” She took the letter fromRadha.

“ Begum Jodha ko Aadab.

Hum aap ke samne ek darkhwast rakhna chahtehai. Hummari pehli begum Rukaiya Sultan kahamal akhri wqt aachuka hai. Humne sunahai ke aap ko ausadi ka bahut gyan hai. Humaap se yeh darkhwast karna chahte hai ki aap in akhri hafton mein unka khayal rakhe.Kiyun ki ek Shahenshah ke bahut se dushman hai. Humare bache ke jaan ko khatra hosakta hai. Hum chahte hai ke aap unke suraksha ka dhyan rakhen.
