Eid ul-Fitr is a three-day celebration that takes place at the end of the Holy month of Ramadan and at the start of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar.
Eid ul-Fitr means “the festival of breaking the fast” and is a religious holiday celebrated by all Muslims across the globe after a month long of fasting throughout Ramadan. The day of Eid differs between countries as it is dependent on the moon sighting.

Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) (PBUH) and therefore Muslims spend the entire month especially the last 10 days reciting the Quran and reflecting upon their lives and behaviour. After a month of dedication and devotion to Allah (SWT), Eid ul-Fitr is the big feast which sees families and friends coming together to celebrate and extend pleasantries.

‘The month of Ramadan is that in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So, whoever sights the new moon of the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and wants for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that to which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.’
- Quran 2:185

The night before Eid ul Fitr, also known as Laylat al Jaiza (means night of rewards) holds great significance and it is believed that whoever offers prayers during this night receives the rewards for all the fasts and good deeds earned during the month of Ramadan. Therefore, many Muslims remain awake till the time for Fajr (the morning prayer) praying and asking for forgiveness.
Muslims take a "Ghusl" (cleansing ritual) before changing into new clothes and gathering in an open area or mosque and offer the Eid Prayer, which consists of 2 rakats (units) and is followed by a Khutbah and a Dua by the Imam asking for forgiveness and peace for everyone around the globe.

Zakat ul-Fitr is a charity donation which must be made before Eid prayers begin, as this is distributed amongst the needy to help them take part in the festival. Families also exchange gifts on this auspicious occasion, especially young children who are excited to receive Eidi from their loved ones.

‘Worship God and join none with Him in worship, and do good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, the poor, the neighbour who is near of kin, the neighbour who is a stranger, the companion by your side, the way farer (you meet) ... Verily, God does not like such as are proud and boastful.’ - Quran 4:36
